On the heels of Sony’s capitulation here’s some more news to lower your opinion of Hollywood decision making:
"Star Trek 3" To Be More "Guardians"-Esque? | News | Dark Horizons (http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/35107/-star-trek-3-to-be-more-guardians-esque)
But wait, there’s more:
What?s Going On With STAR TREK 3? | Badass Digest (http://badassdigest.com/2014/12/15/whats-going-on-with-star-trek-3/)
Yep, Paramount’s chasing those dollar signs. Funny thing is, James Gunn predicted this back in August when GoTG went big at the box office, saying he hoped that studios wouldn’t try to copy the film by making films about lovable rogues in space.
In Hollywood, imitation is the sincerest form of film and money making.
The sequel was more of the same thing and just a bad rip off of a great and better movie called Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Benedict is a great actor but him playing Khan? Come on! And they still haven’t started on their five year mission until the end of the second? This is just terrible writing or something. I recall laughter in my theater over the "KHAN!" line delivered by Spock. Totally out of character. The characters didn’t really develop a significant amount either and this whole movie really just felt like a "filler" movie to lead into the 3rd.
With Justin Lin at the helm, I’m sure we know how the 3rd will be. Fast and furious in space. If we can just enjoy for what these Trek movies are as just mindless fun entertainment you can maybe appreciate it more but if you’re looking for deep interpretations and discussions you’re just not going to find it here.
Hate to say it but I think the Trek that some of us grew up on is gone. Enjoy the remastering projects they got on the horizon. TNG was just recently all finished up for remastering. DS9, especially the latter seasons with the Dominion war would look spectacular if it was all remastered and polished up. Enterprise had the treatment too and I think people are beginning to appreciate what they did with that show now that they see the direction Trek is headed.
