The German bass-baritone Andreas Schmidt (*1960) studied singing with Ingeborg Reichelt
and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He made his opera debut in 1984 as Malatesta in Don Pasquale with the
Deutsche Oper Berlin and subsequently became a member of their ensemble, appearing in such roles as
Guglielmo in Cos fan tutte, Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Wolfram in Tannhuser, Posa in
Don Carlos, and Marcello in La Bohme. As a guest, he has appeared with the Hamburg State Opera,
German State Opera of Berlin, Bavarian State Opera, Vienna State Opera, Grand Thetre Genve,
Royal Opera Covent Garden, Opera de Paris, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, La Scala Milan, and
the Metropolitan Opera. In concert, he has performed with such North American orchestras as
the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and Cleveland
Orchestra; in Europe he has appeared with nearly all the leading orchestras.

Andreas Schmidt made his San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in October 1999, in J.S. Bach’s
St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244), with Peter Schreier conducting. Tours have taken him to the
major European music capitals as well as to those of North and South America, Israel, and Japan.
Besides his engagements as an opera and concert singer, he performs frequently as a recitalist,
collaborating with Rudolf Jansen, Geoffrey Parsons, Daniel Barenboim, Jrg Demus, Roger
Vignoles, and Helmut Deutsch. He is also a frequent guest at music festivals, including those
of Aix-en-Provence, Bayreuth, Edinburgh, Glyndebourne, and Salzburg.

Andreas Schmidt has recorded for Deutsche Grammophon, EMI, Sony, BMG, Decca, Philips,
Teldec, and Hnssler. His recordings of concert music include Johannes Brahms’s A German
Requiem, J.S. Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion (BWV 244), and Gustav Mahler’s Des Knaben
Wunderhorn; his opera recordings include Tannhuser, Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni,
Die Zauberflte, and Fidelio; and his recital albums include the three Schubert cycles.

"The Schmidt disc, with orchestra, blazons World Premiere on its cover. This refers to the
presentation of nine early Mahler songs, originally with piano accompaniment, in sophisticated
style-conscious, occasionally frolicsome new orchestrations by Luciano Berio, the leading
Italian composer of our day. But for me the really remarkable discovery is Strausss 1899
Notturno 15 minutes long, properly a solo cantata meditating on mortality, written for a
voice of Wotan-like grandeur. Andreas Schmidt lacks that, but in terms of understated beauty
of tone, seriousness and eloquence, his performance provides ample compensation."
