Hi guys and girls,

Since my discovery of this site more than seven or eight years ago, I have downloaded more than 10k music. Now I am facing an issue my younger self could not imagine…. My iPod classic (160 GB) is almost full…. And since Apple had the good idea (another great marketing move….) to stop producing any classic ipod anymore, I have to find a suitable replacement that could hold up my entire collection.

The thing is that up to now, I edited the metadata of the music files in a OCD manner, with extreme accuracy and I don’t want that my next music player does not care of my careful Tag editing work.

So guys (and girls again) could you advise me several music players that you can hold up to 500 GB of songs or more and handle the metadata tags? Or anything superior to 160 GB?

Please let me know,

Thank you!

If you look on ebay, I’ve seen modded iPod Classics with upgraded hard drives, and with a custom firmware called RockBox (http://www.rockbox.org/) on them. I’ve seen them with up to 1 terabyte of space on them (http://www.ebay.com/itm/1TB-1000GB-iPod-Video-BLACK-5th-5-5th-Gen-SSD-1-TB-MADE-IN-USA-480GB-240GB-/261663307572?pt=Other_MP3_Players&hash=item3cec593734), but I’ve been a little skeptical, and a little too poor to get one myself. If you get one, let me know how well it works!

Well it is indeed damn expensive.

Maybe I should wait for 256Gb micro SD cards? xD

People say the FiiO is the one to go for audiophiles. But if you’re like me, and so it seems, I would choose something simpler. How do you organize the music? With iTunes?

Back before the iPod came out, these were a dime a dozen. I’m pretty sure Apple bought out their competitors, shut them down, and copyrighted the age-old technology so no one new could enter the market.

At this point though, we’re far enough along that the whole idea of a portable pocket device designed exclusively for music should be obsolete. Unfortunately I don’t think there are many customization options out there for tablets, mini-laptops, and the like. I use my droid ultra in my car, but the audio output is terrible. I don’t know if that’s the device’s fault or my car stereo’s, and at any rate its capacity is pitiful. I would look into any device with the storage capacity you need and positive reviews on sound quality. Windows 8.1 would be a pretty ideal OS as you could just run Winamp or Foobar. Android isn’t a bad option. There might be some good Apple products out there, but I’d rather sit in silence than give them a dime.
