And now the great snipe hunt proceeds in search of Peter Salem’s score for the 1999 BBC/Masterpiece Theatre version.

(Additionally, Danny Elfman fans would do well to listen to the very first track… If you ever wondered where Elfman’s trademark quirky harmonic style received its inspiration, folks, it was Maurice Jarre.)

That said, and I make this comment with the greatest respect, there is something badly wrong with the turntable used for the transfer, or with some part of your process. The original vinyl doesn’t sound brilliant by any stretch of imagination, but nonetheless this transfer doesn’t present it in its best possible light. There is a worrying high frequency rolloff, speed fluctuation, scratches galore, and a slightly worrying omnipresent scraping sound that strongly implies either a) a worn stylus, or b) one of those cheap and nasty record-destroying USB turntable dealies… Anyway… I don’t want to speculate or piss all over SuperSucker’s efforts – NOT AT ALL – so I will just submit my own transfer. Here’s a sneak peek in MP3 format of track 4 – "Pip Esquire" for comparison. The final transfer will be (woohoo!) in FLAC format, and will include full scans.
