Dot Records to produce the album. Dot had been created as an independant company in 1950 by Randy Wood, before Paramount became its owner. In 1967 Dot has released the LP Mission : Impossible, an album that really made its mark, and they followed it with the original soundtrack from Cool Hand Luke. It was obvious to Dot that the label ought to consolidate its ties with this new world composer in the midst of his professional consecration. "Once the initial effect of surprise was over" says Schifrin, "Tom Mack at Dot encouraged me to go ahead and make this opus. He found the concept a little bit disconcerting but he was ready to back me. That was the benefit of the tidal wave from M:I; it consolidated my position and desires when i was facing the people who makes the decisions… The first step in the process was for me to gather material. A number of radio programmers agreed to meet with me so that i could listen to titles with a lot of airplay. I wanted a perspective that summarized the dance rythms in fashion, the sound of the times. I analyzed the way the melodies and harmonies of those records were constructed, and also thier production. Next, i had to take a step back and sort through my ideas before taking the leap. If i remember correctly the first theme tat took shape was Life Insurance. At the time someone has suggested i take out life-insurance, after insisting heavily on its advantages for my family. I didn’t understand a word of the contract…It was all a tangle of foggy clauses and contradictions. I used some of the those same clauses, chanted by a male and female choir in succession. In the end it gave me a legalese rhythm and blues that was rather wild ! This was something out of the twilight zone: I had worked with songwriters and now i had a lyricist working in life insurance ! Another construction was Hawks versus Dove,; AMerican society was divided over VIetnam then, , with pacifists and those who were pro-war never missing a chance to go for each other. My piece was that debate transposed onto a field, for a ball game between hawks and doves. On one side you have a martial hymn, and on te other you have people doing the Jerk;…."
