It’s about time for a new share, as rare as ever. Although the album cover and the booklet photos of cute cats seem to indicate that this is a silly and sappy album, don’t judge too quickly. "A Very Pianist Cat" is a rough translation of the original album title (Neko wa Tottemo Pianist, in romaji) and this is the debut album of some japanese piano player named Takashi Obara. While I know as little as anyone about this piano player, the reason why I bought this album is Kenichiro Isoda, the other composer of this album.

Kenichiro Isoda had a short but amazing career in the vgm scene, he worked along with his brother, Shigeharu Isoda, making ports for several Sega consoles and titles. Little is known of his real contribution to the vgm world, he was never credited as music composer for some titles where he worked on. "Bio-Hazard Battle" or "King Colossus" (Genesis titles) are two games in which he was in charge of the score, and where he showed his great talent writing music. Prior to those games he had worked as music programmer and porter, even arranger, of some famous titles as Fantasy Zone, Ys, Darius…

Well, this album contains two piano arrangements of bgm pieces composed by Kenichiro Isoda for Fantasy Zone (track 2) and Ys (track 11). The rest of the tracks are original pieces written for this album, except three or four well known piano pieces. The album’s tone is surprisingly varied, it explores divesity of moods to maintain the interest of the listener. Contemplative, nostalgic, playful, jazzy, a variety of moods with only a piano.

The pieces are uncomplicated for the most part, nothing of piano acrobatics here (well, except maybe in a pair of tracks), but the piano performance is notable. Anyway, bear in mind that this album is about cute kittens, it’s not trascendental at all, but it may evoke in you the same feeling as seeing cute kittens playing.
