Jean-Pierre Melville, the Stetson-toting filmmaker was a real ogre when it came to musicians, always watching over their shoulders in fear that they would slip out of his hands and fall back on automatisms, on excessive technique or other mannerisms. Therefore, he preferred working with burgeoning young talents who were still malleable (Solal, de Roubaix, Demarsan or Colombier, all in their thirties at that time). He famously rejected John Lewis’ and Michel Legrand’s scores. On this record, Michel Legrand’s rejected score for “Le cercle rouge” finally gets the attention it deserves. This anthology also presents some of the best jazz music composed for French Noir films, a genre that Melville single-handedly and masterfully epitomized.
