THE PROFESSIONALS (TV) – LAURIE JOHNSON – COMPLETE SEASON ONE SCORES [FLAC & 320]

The Network remastered DVD/BluRay of the first season of THE PROFESSIONALS features isolated scores on every episode. I gathered all the music into suites (because many tracks are only a few seconds long) and fixed the inevitable volume dips. The end result is pretty entertaining, though it should be pointed out that the composer clearly scored a lot of episodes by tracking in existing cues – you can hear the same bits of music over and over throughout the season. Consequently, as you listen to these suites, you will experience a growing sense of deja vu.

There are often very abrupt transitions between those reused sections – tape splicing rather than digital crossfades was the norm back in the 70s. I spent a lot of time ‘unpicking’ those abrupt joins and creating a less jarring bridge with a bit of reverb, but in the end there were just too many of them and I gave up, so some remain.

There’s some terrific funky stuff in here, but the season one scores tend to emphasise suspense rather than action. I’m looking forward to the remastered second season, which I think gets a lot funkier.

This is great funk/suspense incidental music as only the 1970s could provide
and Laurie Johnson’s work for THE PROFESSIONALS is truely the best of it’s kind
as much as his swinging sixties-orientated suspense/action music for THE AVENGERS.
Absolutely great work – I am sure that Johnson’s scoring for Season Two will even better
with that suspense music with a 70s funky groove …

This really is great suspense scoring with a 70ies (often funky) vibe – it is
exactly like Don Ellis (THE FRENCH CONNECTION) meets Lalo Schifrin (DIRTY HARRY) – only for TV.
This means that the rhythmic (percussive) ideas are grounded on Jazz-based figures.
The music has a gritty downbeat feeling.
I really enjoy this kind of TV scoring as I adore the 70ies decade of feature films and TV series
the most.
