Water-related music?

What would be your suggestions for a score covering the following?

Old movie in color or B&W, adventures, near the sea, maybe a treasure island or an expedition in prospect. The heroes leave the coastal village in a boat and the cool music begins: harp, strings, some horns… the boat with inflated sails navigating on a bright day toward something exciting. You can add some dolphins accompanying the bow if you wish.

I’d like to know about a score from the Golden Age that includes some music like that; and it will be also interesting to read about other water-related music you like in whatever style, even Carlos Santana’s Aqua Marine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oK9wql4yRfI). 🙂

Vangelis’ scores for The Bounty and 1492 Conquest of Paradise are pretty good. He also did a non-film album called Oceanic, but Voices is also worth checking out (IMO).

That’s interesting, and it is not difficult to associate Vangelis with "liquid". I see that Voices was used as soundtrack for the documentary Deep Seas, and the plots of the movies The Bounty and 1492 Conquest of Paradise look very good. I’ll check them out, thank you.

like all composers, storyboards or a detalied description of the events are needed to identify the proper use of water-insipired music.

ROKUSHO: right, it must be a lot of music that fits somehow what I described, though it was not a particular case. I just felt like listening to that old sound, so, any score from the epoch presenting that kind of light adventurous events on the sea would be worth to check out. If I had to mention actors I would say Errol Flyn or Burt Lancaster, just because I don’t know much about Hollywood’s Golden Age, but surely there are others from previous years.

Something else came to mind. A 70’s BBC show The Onidin Line had a memorable soundtrack.

Yes, theone2000, I meant that ambient with the harps on the initial bars of the first video, or those to more dynamic action starting at 1:18. Then the main melody that follows is quite sentimental, not really adventurous, but the piano contributes to keep the waves in mind. The opening has nice video takes, and it’s a pity that the chosen edit failed to make the most of the music: that Adagio of Spartacus is performed differently on the cool second video and the editor had more freedom, but even so, he clearly pursued a better blend.

Nice also to know a bit more about Khachaturian and to see so many inflated sails. Thank you.
