Be forewarned: this sounds to be sourced for what I can only assume to be the laserdisc isolated score. It’s really shrilly, noisy, the volume is inconsistent, features volume fluctuations within the same cue in the same context and some cues fade out like they do in the film which, if you’re me, then you know that’s not a good thing when you’re listening to it outside of the film.

Also, the first note of the Prelude is oddly faded out. I recall that NOT being an issue on the isolated score so I’m not sure why it’s that way on this set.

Non-caveat (non-buyer) emptor (beware).

cody, why dont you google the Soundstage cd for more info, rather than conjecture. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but I think it’s been discussed to death elsewhere. I have a laserdisc copy which sounds alot better, but I’ve forgotten at this point if they’re identical except for the quality.

According to the booklet, this release happens some "35 years" after the film’s original release. So it’s gotta be from sometime between 1995 and 1996. The signature collection laserdisc was released in 1998.

And indeed, the isolated music from the LD sounds much better than this release. But the best I could get from the LD is a 320kbps mp3, so we still have an advantage here 🙂

it’s clear the Soundstage sounds terrible, and would be at the bottom of anyone’s preference. Uploaded only for the completist or curious. In other words: Not for human consumption!

Every non-US blu-ray release has a DTS-HD Master Audio of the original mono mix from Psycho in 48/16 (it’s not the isolated score). The US version is 48/24, but at a lossy 768kbps DTS. It’s sounds terrific! The sound in the isolated score 1998 LD is close to this, but not as good.

Yes, the 5.1 is lossless and it’s present everywhere. However, I wouldn’t use it as a comparision because it’s artificially expanded from mono to 5.1 surround. It’s not the case where a new multitrack master of the music was located and used it. The surviving masters are in mono only, so mono is the way to go.

I ask myself the same question about a decent LD transfer of the isolated music. I swear if I had the proper equipment and the LD itself, I’d gladly do it.

And speaking of better quality, another option is the 5.1 bluray, which some have made into a music (with lite effects) track.

my point was to compare apples to apples – that is, a mostly music-only soundtrack made from the 5.1 compared to the laser music-only. No music buff is going to edit the mono movie audio into a music-only soundtrack.

The blu-ray had a featurette on the making of the 5.1, and with advanced software, it seemed like they could separate out the music….but why bother when there’s that laser music-only track somewhere.

I dunno, but someone on another site sent me (as mp3) his blu-ray edit. Just playing it now, it’s not that great – maybe certain frequencies are missing which were on the dialog channel. I dont think he balanced the volume level. He might have used the normal mono for the opening credits since it’s not a scene with effects.

I dont have time to do a thorough comparison, but it would be interesting if folks compared the blu-edit and laser music-only. I didnt make the blu edit, so I cant say how it was made and if it could be improved (besides fixing volume levels).

I listened to the BD edit and there is a lot more sound effects than I anticipated. Personally, I don’t like sound effects (ambiance, rain, doors closing, shower water) and there is too much for the music to be enjoyable for me. I can’t comment on the quality since what I listened to was MP3.

it’s 320 mp3, so I doubt that would be an issue when comparing to the laserdisc files. Btw, the laser track would be analog output to some digital recorder, not digitally duplicated, if you want to identify every possible quality change.
I only have a boombox, so I didnt notice the effects that much, except loud ones like the car being towed out of the swamp.

I should know, I won a copy in a e-bay bidding war, from someone in Germany for $94.00 I love it and yes it sounds like a very bad recording, but it matches the sound of the film on DVD, I think were it was recorded back then was a very bad recording stage, etc… That’s why Danny Elfman wanted to record the score for the PSYCHO remake, so fan could here how he felt Herrmann wanted the score to sound like.
He just did not have the Tech we have today!
