BLEGH! Thats the one word I have regarding ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’. The music isnt the culprit, its the sound. After doing ‘Bourne Supremacy’ I fully expected this score to be a walk in the park. I could not have been more wrong… though I should have known. For years, the OST CD has bugged me with its grey, lifeless, dynamically overcompressed yet more orchestr-y and bigger sound, all of it distinctively different compared to the other Bourne-scores. When I started to work on my Deluxe Edition I wanted to get rid of all these shortcomings in order for ‘Ultimatum’ sounding more like ‘Supremacy’. Well, I ended up with a sound thats closer to my version of ‘Legacy’… and it took me a week to do so.
Faults of the OST and bootleg:
– very nasty and audible sine at precisely 11.025 Hz
– mixing by Shawn Murphy
– orchestra sounds utterly horrible
– stereo channel separation not consistent throught entire frequency band
The 11.025 Hz sine was probably the biggest problem: in order to weaken it, the engineers (recording, mixing or mastering) diminished the level of treble within a comparably wide frequency band. Secondly, they emphasized frequencies above. On occasion, this works well with purely orchestral recordings, but ‘Ultimatum’ is in essence (just like ‘Supremacy’ and ‘Identity’) an electronic score and because of that it didnt work here… why they didnt use a narrow band notch filter is beyond me. I assume that they hired Shawn Murphy to make the sound of this score ‘bigger’. With his symphonic sensibilities, honed over decades while performing engineering and mixing tasks for the likes of J. Williams and JNH, he (to my ears) approached this score differently compared to the other ones. An understandable decision but IMO, its a departure from the typical Bourne-sound and (as much as I adore S. Murphy) not befitting for this franchise. I wanted to tone that down by making it more direct and aggressive and less ‘big’.
The orchestra is the same one used fairly often by Remote Control employees. It certainly sounds like that: droning bass, no mids, boosted presence area and some curious high frequency peaks (an obvious one at roughly 9.500 Hz), all embedded within muffled sound. I think it was supposed to sound warm and pleasant, though the actual outcome sounds like (sorry) shit. Especially the 9.500 Hz peak was very disturbing.
Blablabla… to make a long story short, I did ‘Ultimatum’ twice. I wanted to get rid of all the aformentioned errors, I also wanted to infuse it with a pleasant, warm, yet aggressive and punchy sound. I ended up equalizing each track individually… something I never do because of the danger of making the sound inconsistent over the CD runtime. Anyway, I failed with the first version, it still sounded like crap. The second one is much better: ‘warm’ (perhaps a tad too warm), a compact, precisely rendered virtual stage with loads of depth (a.k.a the opposite of the OST). The sound is pleasant yet aggressive and punchy with nice ‘prat’. I like it but I freely admit that it might not be everyones cup of tea.
As usual, I combined some tracks. Half of my crossfade choices are inaudible; the one combining the tracks ‘Waterloo Pt. I’ & ‘II’ could either be ingenious or completely bollocks. Im undecided regarding this matter, Im sure some will hate it, some will love it. Oh yes… Ive shortened some tracks to tighten the musical narrative. Dont worry, I didnt remove anything important, just some musical blabla. On the other hand, Ive incorporated the updated version of ‘Extreme Ways’. It comes from my OST CD of course.
Shall I say something about the cover? Ugh… I think not. I like it, it does its job.
Really: its not beautiful but I like it. My favourite cover would be the last (on the far right). You dont need to see Matt Damon’s face to know that hes Jason Bourne.
My main problem is: I dont particularly like this score anymore because of its botched-up sound. But maybe you people will take something good out of it.

I don’t like the Bourne films at all, but the music is really great. Thank you so much for your efforts, Sonic!
thanks 🙂

Anyone else having trouble extracting Tangiers Chase? It’s says "wrong password"???
Shall I say something about the cover? Ugh…
even though I think they’re pretty good, I did a quick one.

Aaaaah, thats too nice of you. Though I can really recommend this movie – warmly. Its even better than the music.

Thanks SonicAdventure. 🙂 I’ve always liked this score (I guess I just can’t pick up all the issues/problems you mentioned on my crappy $10 speakers lol). It’s not as good as the Supremacy score, but still one I’ve always enjoyed. And I see a couple people here feel otherwise, but I’ve always REALLY liked the film as well.

I agree: its definitely not as good as Supremacy (though the movie it is attached to is superior). Ive always wondered why people keep bashing Supremacy, to me its one of the best scores of the last ten years.
BTW, I downloaded it and extracted it – no problem. Try re-downloading, if that still doesnt work, check the program you use for extracting. If thats ok it might be caused by defect RAM or FrontSideBus (if you still have something like that).

Erm… I didnt exactly bash my own covers :D. I think that theyre servicable. Regarding your cover: thank you!
But – if I may be a critique – the ‘Deluxe Edition’ is squeezed too much (just like ‘Music composed by…’ which is also too close to the corner). I also would have moved ‘Ultimatum’ so that its ‘U’ is exactly below the ‘O’ of ‘Bourne’. Though I love that you centered the poster design… I restricted myself too much by aligning it to the left side as I wanted to re-create the OSTs cover. Did you use Arial as a font? On the Bourne posters they used the font Swiss 721 and just like Arial this is a Helvetica derived font.

Agreed on both counts. The Ultimatum is a film that I really enjoy upon many repeat viewings, but the real standout is the score for the Supremacy. My favorites are Morning Run, Goa Chase, Funeral Pyre, and Atonement, but the whole score is just SOOO good! Tracks like The Drop, Nach Deutschland, To The Roof, Berlin Foot Chase etc… Just plain LOVE that score. I’m listening to your deluxe version right now as I’m typing. 😀

I’ve now downloaded it twice with the same result. I normally use 7-Zip but I also installed Winrar and it’s the same with both. I don’t know what a "FrontSideBus" is but I REALLY hope my RAM isn’t dying. 🙁 Regardless, could you pretty please (flutters eyelashes) upload just "Tangiers Chase" for me? Sorry to be a bother. 🙁

I guess I should have added a wink face in there. I was attempting to be funny. My first mistake! lol…

Thanks for the input (and I’m not trying to be sarcastic or anything). The only way to get better is to have people point you in the right direction, so thanks. 🙂 I’ve updating my post with a new version, what do you think?
Yes, agree with you completely! Such a wonderful score. I actually think that my Edition isnt an improvement, for one, the OST CD is the more rounded listening experience, secondly, the sound of my edition isnt up to my usual standards. Though they could have included ‘Goa Chase’ on the OST, theres some very nice oriental string work in it.

The Front Side Bus was the interface between CPU, RAM, card slots, South Bridge etc. on older Intel systems (pre-2008). Nowadays, most of these things are included in the CPU itself. Whats your hardware? Have you overclocked it?
And Id do anything for those pretty eyelashes: Download links for Tangiers.rar – Mirrorcreator – Upload files to multiple hosts (http://www.mirrorcreator.com/files/YIYFZBGO/Tangiers.rar_links) (pass is the same as above).

Im sorry… I should have said that Im as critical with others as Im with me. Yes, now your cover is better. Though the font is still very squeezed – if you want a font that is actually designed to look flat and squeezed I suggest ‘Bank Gothic’. Bank Gothic Medium FREE font download at Font-zone.com (http://www.font-zone.com/download.php?fid=111)
Edit: Do you know if the orchestra is the Hollywood Studio Symphony, as with the score for Supremacy? Or is it somebody else? I know that Powell generally uses Hollywood Studio but I can’t find any confirmation on this one.
Can’t agree more!
Exactly why I was sooooooo thankful for the expanded leak. I REALLY missed that track when I first listened to the OST.

You need a program to allow you to "overclock" right? It’s not something that just happens by accident right? So I don’t think so…

I had "squeezed" the text because I wanted it smaller compared to the title, but I guess it just wasn’t working. Oh well, I’ve updated again, and plus your covers are really good anyhow. Better than you give yourself credit for. 🙂
Thanks again for you hard work!

Listening to this score now. I love Six Weeks Ago and how it seems to fade into Waterloo station even though there is about a three second gap until the next track. It’s official this first track shall be my new running track going through the woods here. I love how the sound just drops at 2:10. You just know something is about to happen…
Edit: Do you know if the orchestra is the Hollywood Studio Symphony, as with the score for Supremacy? Or is it somebody else? I know that Powell generally uses Hollywood Studio but I can’t find any confirmation on this one.
Its the Air Lyndhurst Orchestra, conducted by Gavin Greenaway. Supremacy was the Hollywood Studio Symphony, conducted by Pete Anthony.

Password doesn’t work… Damn!
Did you type in the password or copy and paste it? I can’t count the number of times copying and pasting did it cause I didn’t realize I had mis-typed.
you have kept quite a overall balance! when comparing to the ost and leak, i definitely hear more in the middle, and the highs are sparkly in a good way as in very detailed without shadowing the mids. the lower end is nice and punchy and not too bombastic and not poisoning the middle and upper end. it all works rather well. i take my hat off to you, extremely well done!
Wait a second! You ended up with a sound closer to your version of Legacy?? As in, The BOURNE Legacy? I look forward to listening to that one if you ever post it!
Half of my crossfade choices are inaudible; the one combining the tracks ‘Waterloo Pt. I’ & ‘II’ could either be ingenious or completely bollocks.
I for one think that crossfade is bollocks, but I’m definitely digging the new sound overall, especially in tracks like "Ross Terminated." Don’t know if "punchier" is really the right word for the more noticeably improved bits, but just like with the newly released film mixes of cues like "Remus" and "The Scorpion" on the new Star Trek: Nemesis set, I’m quite pleased to hear a higher amount of detail and instrument separation. It’s kinda like hearing the music again for the first time and it’s a truly wonderful feeling!
As always, thanks for sharing Sonic! And for taking the time to do this one right after Supremacy no less!

Thank you for the information. The score sounds fantastic!
Crap, I shouldnt have mentioned it. Yes, my version of ‘Bourne Legacy’ by JNH. It wont be shared here, I simply refuse to share OSTs. Unless I can add something not released before, something of additional value. And slightly updated sound doesnt merit a release when its on its own. The moment the sessions for ‘Legacy’ leak, Ill release a Deluxe Edition.

LOL! Yes, the crossfade could have been done differently, like on the OST for example. But I didnt want to leave out this tiny part, I happened to like it. And ‘Star Trek: Nemesis’ profits immensely from the fact that they used the filmmix with the more prominently featured percussion and synths. When I did my Deluxe Edition years ago I wanted to achieve the same… but I can only alter anything after the fact while they have true multitracks which naturally is much more advantageous.
I’d like to be able to listen your Bourne Supremacy Remastered soon 😉

The first one is my pick, after that they go down like the proverbial brick in water.
The Waterloo Station transition sounds perfect and the improvements in dynamics of your remaster are great too. In fact, I didn’t suspect you could reconstruct a track without the master tapes, so this is like magic to me!
thanks buddy for your hard work and sharing it with us 🙂
