How do you tag your VGM?

Hi, lurker here. Be Attitude For Engrish.

My VGM libraby is constatly growing thanks to this forum and internet randoms, but I still can’t tag then reliably.

For now I simply use the game name as artist and the music name as title. This leads to 2 main issues:

– Poor tags: Overall they to their job, but some tags are very odd because…
– Mis/unnamed songs: This and also japanese/other names, which I can’t read and Windows insists from time to time that he doesn’t know how to show then.

Is there a easy way? Thanks for any help.

fefo i use mp3tag to tag files. It works fine on flac, mp3, ape, etc.

I tag the name of the movie/anime/vgm as album title, and composer name as artist. For track names i usually go to sites like soundtrackcollector for movies and vgmdb for anime and VG music, as a place source for track names and tracklist order. There are other sites that gives you other info too (e.g. musicbrainz, allmusic)

You can edit your titles tag one by one, but for CD’s with many tracks it’s better to copy and paste the track names to a notepad and then import to your tags through mp3tag. It’s a bit tricky at first but it’s quite useful once you’ll get used to it and best of all it saves you a lot of work!

If your windows can’t show japanese or other asian characters, then maybe you should tag your files in romanized words? For instance, on vgmdb there are plenty of albums that have track names in romaji and sometimes translated in english.

I use AIMP Tag Editor. Dunno if it can export tags from text files, but for everything else it’s just fine. Doing it manually is easy, but big OSTs with wrong/no tags are very troublesome. Sadly VGMdb does not give any sample, so for now I had to use Youtube to discover what am I hearing.

I use mp3tag too, but MusicBrainz picard can occasionally help.
You might also look at Video Game Music and Anime Soundtrack Database | VGMdb (http://vgmdb.net/) and correct tag manually.
I can’t bear japanese titled file, so I try usually to rename them in english.

The japanese was mainly a rant. I can’t read japanese, but at least I can recognize and search the name. A bunch of squares don’t give me this choice.

Wasted some hours fixing my Super Mario Galaxy OST. If someone develop something capable of identifying VGM it would be lovely.

Nah, Win 7. Made everything necessary to display then and it worked for a few days. Remade the steps, no luck. Now sometimes they are ok, most of the time time I have squares 🙁
