UNFORTUNATELY, this re-recording is pretty… meh. Oh, it’s a solid efford, no doubt about it. BUT…
First of all, Nic Raine simply is not William Stromberg. I said it once, I say it again. The pace often feels too slow, some cues feel like conducted (and played) under sedation. Watch the film (or listen to the bootleg) if you don’t understand what I mean.
The orchestra… is kinda there. I actually like the City of Prague Orchestra, I really do. But not here. The original simply sounds WAY more lively. Bombastic. THERE. Maybe more practice next time?
Finally the violin, oh that bloody violin… Jascha Heifetz cannot be copied. He was one of a kind. Period. But… there are good solo violinists who CAN get to his level of (almost) Paganini insanity. Or at least try hard to. Alas, not in this case.
It’s a nice listen overall, actually, but I prefer the rip from the (now hyper rare) laser disc’s music only-track. Or the "Quality Sound"-bootleg (?!?) which is not a very good recording, but at least from the original.
Hoping for a Stromberg-version? Well, I don’t think so. *sigh*
But maybe when they FINALLY attempt to restore the roadshow-version of this film, a better recording of the original soundtrack may show up. We can always dream, can’t we…
Cheers and Thanks in Advance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
pretty quick I must say 😉
