There’s something about Japanese dramas that tend to inspire lobotomised scores… BIG melodies, manipulative and relatively simple harmonies, untaxing orchestration. It’s the "house style" I think. This, I think, is one example of a score that makes great things from those limitations. Yamashita doesn’t devitate from the expected sound, but produces something immediately recognisable, approachable, and intelligent.

Japanese dramas and movies do call for simplistic harmonies and structures. Even the most skilled Japanese composers haven’t showcased much notable score in those media for ages. Gotta appeal to the mass in some way and fit those optimistic shows and movies somehow.
Anime score on the other hand… 😉
And about this album… I must be loving it because of the heavy French influence.
