Brahms had an intense interest in musical history, reviving baroque and renaissance music, editing Mozart, and an antique air hangs over this beautiful sequence of rare shorter choral works. The choir-only "Warum ist das Licht gegeben" is the most ethereal, the "Alto Rhapsody" is the best known, but the two most powerful bookend the collection. The "Schicksaslied" (Song of Destiny) is visionary, while the "Gesang der Parzen" (Song of the Fates) is one of his most adventurous and wild creations. To hear this music performed with the cool precision and shining transparency of Philippe Herreweghe’s forces sends shivers down the spine.
