Ben Affleck cast as Batman

What the hell are they thinking? Jesus christ.

I disagree. Affleck is a good choice. He’s a very good actor, (and director), is the right age for playing an older Batman – especially if Zack Synder really is using The Dark Knight Returns as his template for the movie, has the charm to portray Bruce Wayne and Affleck has respect for the source material, in other words won’t think he’s slumming because he’s portraying a superhero.

Who would have been your choice?

He’s a great director and a way better actor than he used to be that’s why i’m willing to give him a chance but he would not have been my top choice! To be fair i can’t really see anyone else besides Christian Bale playing Batman! I think anson Mount from Hell on Wheels would have been an interesting choice! at least they didn’t choose Orlando Bloom!

Anson Mount, yes, I can see him in the role of Batman. Christopher Nolan is producing the Superman movies and I have tremendous faith – which he has earned – in his casting choices. (When Heath Ledger won the role of the Joker I was skeptical of the choice – great actor but the Joker?. Well, my skepticism was unfounded and Ledger was fantastic – may he rest in peace.) And Snyder might learn a thing or two about directing from Affleck.

Ben Affleck flunked Daredevil hard. That should be enough to be banned from any superhero movie. Oh, and he said this:

"by playing a superhero in Daredevil, I have inoculated myself from ever playing another superhero… Wearing a costume was a source of humiliation for me and something I wouldn’t want to do again soon."

But hey, they pay well enough!

Yeah Daredevil sucked but it’s mostly the director who’s to blame! He also directed Ghost Rider and it was even worse than Daredevil! Affleck said he wouldn’t want to do that again anytime soon, it was ten years ago so he’s probably okay now, plus who would’t want to play Batman?

Yeah, yeah, I know. I was pissed off yesterday, now I’ve thought it better and don’t need to go fanboy all over it. I like it? No, I think they could’ve cast a more suited actor (the guy who played Dredd in the last one, for example Karl Urban?) but everything can happen. Maybe they’ll surprise us and pull an amazing Batman. Who knows.

…but if this bombs I’m gonna laugh like a madman and say "Told you so!" to everyone.

Let’s hope you won’t have to! You’re right about Karl urban by the way, he would make a great Batman! I would rather see him in a Dredd sequel though!

Michael Keaton was THE perfect choice in my opinion, and guys like Ben Affleck are just the opposite of what such a character needs.
The big problem is the Bruce Wayne side: only Keaton looked crazy and weird enough to sell the basic idea of a guy who needs a secret identity.
When Bruce is around people he has to look slightly awkward, when he puts on his "armour" he finally feels strong and focused. And let’s not forget
Keaton had smart, piercing eyes that instantly told you Batman’s main weapon was wit, not strenght.

I’ll agree, Ghost Rider is terrible, but I actually liked Daredevil (the directors cut anyway).

Im looking forward to Ben Affleck playing Batman. Hes a great actor (now more than ever!) and a fantastic director! I think hell be fine, maybe not the best, but I think he will do the role justice.

Keep in mind, Michael Keaton WAS the perfect choice. Not so much anymore. He was perfect because Tim Burton’s Batman had a very "comic book" tone to the film. If you tried to put him in Christopher Nolan Dark Knight Trilogy, he wouldnt be so perfect anymore.

I agree with that, but it doesn’t influence my opinion all that much since I don’t like Nolan’s films at all 😉 Of course I’m not sayin’ they should ask Keaton to do Man of Steel 2, but I think they sould try to learn from that casting direction, instead of choosing another generic good looking guy who doesn’t look at all like an eccentric millionaire.

but at least this time he has a director behind him. not that p.o.s. director that did DareDevil.
Had the studios killed Jon Favreau and released the Director’s Cut in the first place, the movie would have done better than Ghost Rider (both of them combined).
Also Jennifer Garner wasn’t too great. She was okay. But I can see at the time the movie was being made and the time it hit home sales, there was really nothing that can be done in Hollywood. It was going through a shit slum.
I mean it still is. The Green Lantern just came out not too long ago and most people are still suffering nightmares and having fake Tony Stark fake anxiety attacks.

I’m actually really damn curious to see how this pans out.
I’ve always liked the roles where he wasn’t a complete douche and where he was given more credibility and flexibility.
His directing has certainly improved his name. Everyone in my family was in disbelief at first but they figure it was because he can do brooding well and his directing made him less douchy.

Affleck is a fine actor. that’s not the problem.

Hollywood is just an awful mess nowadays. there are so many great stories they could be doing instead of comic books.

just my two cents form an ‘old guy’. (and i did read comics as a kid)

Hollywood is a business and it goes with what sells and what sells at the moment are superheroes. Part of the "problem", if you want to call it that, is Hollywood is global. The US box office take is smaller than the global box office and Hollywood makes films that must also sell in China, Russia, India and Europe as well as the States. (As one critic put it ‘explosions don’t require subtitles.’)

For example 3D is pretty much done in the States or at least leveled off in popularity but 3D is huge in China, one reason films keep getting made in 3D or converted to 3D. Also there is the cost of marketing a film, of getting people aware and interested in seeing a film. That’s why we keep getting Transformers or superhero movies, people are already aware of them thanks to cartoons and comic books, they’ve been pre-sold, so to speak. (Which explains all the reboots, re-imaginings and sequels, Hollywood doesn’t have to spend the ton of money to market them that they would on a film that is an original.)

And when something original does come along like a ‘Cloud Atlas’ it bombs with the audience. (When I went to see it last year the fellow seated in the row in front of me said at movies’ end "I didn’t understand it." I think it was more along the lines of "I wasn’t paying attention. It hurts too much to think.") There’s little incentive, currently, to go with something new when the familiar sells.

Which is one reason, I think, why Warner went with Affleck. They want an older Batman, Affleck is 41, who can portray the Bat’s physicality, Affleck is already in training, but also bring the necessary charm to the Bruce Wayne persona. But also Affleck has a certain amount of name recognition not only as an actor but as a director who just won an Academy award for "Argo." (And before that he directed "Gone, Baby, Gone" and "The Town" probably the best heist movie since "Heat.") Affleck’s presence will get the Batman/Superman movie an increased level of public attention not to mention free publicity.

At the end of the day its all about getting asses into those movie theater seats.

The Dark Knight and The Town are awesome throwbacks to Mann’s best work, imo.

I think Ben Affleck is a better choice than Christian Bale.

I can’t really picture Ben as Batman, but I can see him as Bruce Wayne. Batman’s quite difficult to cast as it’s like casting an actor who can effectively portray two completely different roles because although they’re the same person, Bruce and Batman are so different, it’s like they’re two different people.

Ben’s a great actor though. So I’m gonna give him a chance.

I remember people thinking how Robert Downey Jr would do as Iron Man, He proved the naysayers wrong. Maybe Ben will do the same with Batman, We won’t know till we actually see it.
