Thumbs Up!!
That’s perfect, as usual 🙂
To be honest and to put it the most straightforward way – I just don’t care much for it. It doesn’t do anything for me. Almost none of the melodies seem to be interesting or make me feel for it. I don’t want to say that the music here is bland, but pretty much that’s what it is. It’s not the kind of soundtrack I can listen to outside the game. And who knows maybe it works really well inside the game, I have yet to play and see. But listening to it on its own – gosh, I could fall asleep. 🙂
What’s your take on it?
So he’s been rehashing his own compositions over and over for a while now, huh? What an asshole!! :O Hehe, nah, just kidding, I don’t know the man’s other works, and never heard Brokeback Mountain’s score, so I’m not gonna judge him on that. But your point is clear.
As for Zimmer, I think he’s ok (Hellz yeah he made a damn nice main theme for Crysis 2). If he gets a lot of public praise – let him have it. He deserves it. Plus he’s old, so what can you take from an old man. His main themes (for movies) are generally well done. But I’d like to see him more in video games. It’s the same thing… games are cinematic as shit nowadays anyways.

But your point is clear.i wouldn’t go as far as calling him an asshole but at the same time i think musically the audience should be afforded a variety, especially when it comes to revered artists. would Goldsmith have been so highly regarded if he just recycled things from his early works (Patton, Chinatown, etc.) all the way up until his death? it was his willingness to incorporate variance that helped his legacy and i think a lot of the current composers still active today are beginning to lose sight of that. maybe it’s a different creative climate to blame, i’m not sure but it’s become far easier to spot the guys not really turning in their best effort than it was roughly three decades ago.

It’s the same thing… games are cinematic as shit nowadays anyways.i have less hatred for Zimmer than most i guess but again it’s easy to spot the repetitive approach (i won’t call out anything about the perceived laziness so many others harp on as no doubt some effort goes into repeating things) he takes when working on just about anything these days. it’s strange though seeing someone say they like Zimmer for his themes. his early themes are respectable but for me anything more recent he’s turned in has felt so far from a theme cue that it makes me want to weep a little (Dark Knight Rises, Man of Steel, anyone?)
Especially regarding Gustavo Santaolalla
He did some really good OST in the past.. like The Motorcycle Diaries Soundtrack for example ..
You know I think that repeating certain segments of your work is ok, it’s like doing a fan service, but gotta be careful and not overdo it. I’m gonna give an example of one of my alltime favorite vgm artist: kt2 (http://vgmdb.net/artist/209).
There are a couple noticeably similar tracks between his Abandoner (http://vgmdb.net/album/3980) and No Reality (http://vgmdb.net/album/5533) albums. I absolutely love that fact. That’s an example where fan service works. Part of why the similarities are adequate here is the because both games (visual novels) have a matching noir atmosphere.
