The music of Derek Bourgeois has been staple part of the brass band repertoire for well over 20 years. This survey by Dr King and Yorkshire Building Society coincides with the world premire of Apocalypse at the gala concert following the European Championships in 2003. This is virtuoso music for a virtuoso band but, since Dr Bourgeois is basically a tonal composer, everything on this disc would be immediately comprehensible to the non specialist listener.
A true genius, a great man, and one of the most prolific – if not THE most prolific – contemporary composers. When we spoke he was up to about twenty symphonies, and now he’s written EIGHTY symphonies…! Scary stuff…
Thank you, Kevin!
