Shaolin Soccer is a 2001 Hong Kong comedy film co-written, directed by and starring Stephen Chow. A former Shaolin monk reunites his five brothers, years after their master’s death, to apply their superhuman martial arts skills to play soccer and bring Shaolin kung fu to the masses.
China’s State Administration of Radio, Film and TV rejected Shaolin Soccer from theatrical and DVD/VCD release, because of the possibility of insulting Buddhists by putting "soccer" alongside "Shaolin" in the title. Stephen Chow refused to change the title; as a result, the film’s producers were banned from shooting films in mainland China for one year.
