I’ve been working on the presumption for many years that the classic John Barry score has been lost forever, no masters or anything that could ever be construed as an original score.

I was wrong.

After much digging and googling, I found out that there is an actual score, it’s rarer than the holy grail itself but it does exist and it’s on CD.

My source is on YouTube and I quote:

300 12" lazerdiscs of the original score were made to be played in cinemas during intermission/prescreening. A company in japan were to produce a 12" vinyl album on the films release, but when it became obvious the film was going to bomb, Barry pulled the plug. In the early/mid 90’s the company bootlegged CD’s from the lazerdisc. Barry got wind and instigated legal proceedings. A handful of discs got out. These discs, and subsequent 3rd, 4th etc generation copies are what is out there. With regards the original analogue tapes, the lazerdiscs were made from them, but the "pure score" version tapes HAVE disappeared. However, a second set of tapes is in the archives of ITC, Lord Lew Grades production company, but these have sound effects over some of the tracks, making them impractical to use for further CD usage. The prelude, main title and closing theme would be the only tracks without FX.

Here is the "bootleg" track listing.

Prelude 1:58
Main Title/Mine Shaft 3:16
Sicilian Project/Dog Attack 2:33
Sicilian Defence/Southby/The Mountain Comes to Us 3:06
We’re in Business 1:45
To Cornwall/All that’s Left 2:27
Deep Quest/Flood! 5:26
Finding the Comet/Spy on Board/The Smoke Stack 4:53
The Titanic Uncovered 3:58
Gene Explores The Titanic/Deep Quest Trapped 3:43
Rescue Attempt/Blowing the Tanks 3:50
Raise the Titanic/Deep Quest Saved 3:32
Memories of the Titanic 2:10
Russian Threat/Titanic Enters New York Harbour 2:58
Thank God for Southby/In the Graveyard/End Titles 4:46

Needless to say that my chances of actually finding this are beyond remotely impossible, but the hope is there, it does exist.

As the tagline says "They’ve found the Titanic. There’s just one thing left to do…"

it indeed exists… and is frankly quite easy to track down once you know where to look

Really? The only version I’ve ever been able to find is the Nic Raine version … which I dislike with a passion!

Thanks but that’s the re-recording, this is relating to the original score, which has long thought been lost.

The re-recording is from 1999, it does appear that the bootleg and re-recorded versions have identical tracks except for the re-recording which (I think this is correct without checking) contains a suite as the final track, the bootleg does not. Later I’ll post samples of both scores, there are noticeable differences.

From what I gather you’ll know you have the bootleg rather than that have come by it.

Here is a quick track to demonstrate the differences in the re-recording and the original score.

The first section is this re-recording. It’s softer and there is less of a crescendo than the second which is from the ACTUAL score (taken from DVD source). There is a noticeable difference in both versions.

This one is one of my most Holy of Holy Grails. If ANYONE can find this please post. It’s Barry’s best score of that era.
