Frank Bridge

The Sea
1) Seascape
2) Sea-foam
3) Moonlight
4) Storm

5) Summer
6) Cherry Ripe
7) Enter Spring- Rhapsody
8) Lament

The Sea is probably Bridge’s most popular work. It is a charming tone poem that evokes the titles of each movement. Shorty after its composition there occurred a ‘deepening self-awareness & growing richness of style which were to have an unpredictable outcome.’ Three stages represent his work. Summer represents simple music yet unorthodox ‘and perfect as some process of nature’. To this period also belongs the short but ‘darkly troubled Lament’. Dedicated to ‘Catherine, aged 9, Lusitania 1915’. The third stage of his work became more troubled, more protesting. The exception is Enter Spring. My favorite. A tone poem generated from the composer’s walks through Sussex downs. This is intoxicating music that builds and builds and builds; the central melody returns as a triumphant processional. You most certainly will want to listen to it immediately after the first listening. It is… special. Great fun.
