it seems that the best music is composed exclusively in japan. Oh wait, there are those three western games that were curiously left out.

Also, Max Payne 3 and Black Mesa are glaring omissions. Hotline Miami, Fez and Darksiders 2 were also pretty great (however all in all 2012 was inferior to 2011 in terms of music).

Darksiders 2 had few magnificent pieces, Guild Wars 2 with 4 discs total sure had some great tunes as well…
Far Cry 3 and others omitting on purpose? Goddamn it man, it boils down to personal taste, I know, but really almost jp only?

…yeah, AC Liberation was seriously better than AC3 score in my eyes…

Why no tracklist to see what exact songs you’ve selected?

and if pic not related why put it there?

…guess I’m in total criticism mode atm

In terms of western works I’d definitely say Mists of Pandaria should have gotten a nod. Regardless of what you think of MMOs there’s over eight hours of music there written by some of the best guys in the industry. There’s some real gold, and plenty of five star tracks.

Jake Kaufman’s work on Double Dragon and Chris Lennertz’s Starhawk both had some killer pieces too that are worth looking at. Someone already mentioned it, but Jeremy Soule on Guild Wars 2 also had some nice stuff if you don’t mind that it’s almost all synth.

I mean regardless, thanks for this, really. I’ll give it a listen, but there’s no harm throwing a little regional diversity into the mix

Yeah I think to make it up, I’ll create a volume 2 that is all western. I don’t want it to seem like I’m pro japan anti-west. So next week it’ll be all western compositions. I’d need some recommendations though to compete with 27 tracks

besides the beforementioned you could try x-com enemy unknown (i know, i’m a sucker for all things mccann), the remixes from Syndicate are kickass (tho only one appears in the game), "Megadeth – NeverDead" (from NeverDead, duh), some of the tracks from Fall of Cybertron were pretty great, the main theme from black ops 2 by trent reznor and the track "truth revealed" from Spec Ops – The Line.

I am yet to listen to diablo 3 and guild wars 2 score (the latter should be great) and that is all I can think of, not a great year in video game music (westernwise of course).

Oh, and get rid of this horrid picture.

I’ll def look into these and yeah honestly I just couldn’t find a good photo but that one was stupid.

when is the next?
I like yearly compilations like these, in case I missed some awesome albums.

I listened to this compilation. Whoa, it seems that japanese composers havent evolved a thing for like 10 years. But that’s often on par with games they are introduced in, so I guess that works. And I thought that the western side wasnt too great last year… 😉

Awaiting Part 2 nonetheless.
