Thanks to kgray Im now able to present to you a complete and gorgeous sounding soundtrack: "Salt" by James Newton Howard. As you all know kgray shared the sessions some days ago and that fact made me very happy because not only would I enjoy additional tracks but also a perhaps improved sound quality. As it turned out I was right: the sessions lack the horrible dynamic compression of the original CD. If you dont know what Im talking about go ahead and read this: Loudness war – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war). The official CD suffered from very audible artifacts introduced by badly configured compressors, artifacts such as pumping effects, distortions etc. Generally the sound quality always was pretty horrible and Ive tried to correct these errors five times during the past three years. Thats also the reason why this release happened so fast: I knew exactly what I wanted because I had done it so often before. But the sessions enabled me to do something else: normally I only ‘remaster’, which in my case means nothing more than to adapt something to my liking. But in case of "Salt" I had the rare opportunity to master the sessions for release. Yes, this is not remastering, this is a unique 1st mastering exactly like a mastering engineer would do for an official CD. The files for "Salt" were in 16/48 and hadnt been mastered at all so I had to do everything: ordering, EQ, dynamics, mixing, titling, cover, etc.
What I did (in the highest quality of course using 32/192 files and the best DSPs):
– creating my own sound, deviating strongly from the sound of the official CD and the sessions
– now the orchestra is clearly audible, bass isnt ‘droning’ anymore, stage is deeper and equally wide
– drumpads and synth high hats were extremely ‘in-your-face’ before, this is now gone while at the same time the orchestra has more gloss and crispness
– removing some clicks or drop-outs in the session files
– like on the official release I reduced dynamics a bit – dont worry, not remotely as much, it still helped to create real ‘punch’ though; BTW, I did this manually by hand for every single track
– I combined some tracks exactly like they were on the official CD – these mixes make sense and create a cohesive whole that flows very nicely
– I moved the tracks "Accusations (Alternate)" and "Bagpipe Overlay" to the end of CD 2: the latter didnt really fit in and an alternate belongs to the end IMO
– when you look at the tracklist you can see that I retitled some tracks, its still complete
I cant talk about much about the covers, they are pretty standard. I copied a design from Luis Roja and also created my own. You can pick between two front covers, three back covers and two inlay covers.

Enjoy!!
P.S.: As always, dont ask for mp3s. Make them yourself. If you dont know how google it, this should be common knowledge these days. When the archives are gone, theyre gone, I wont upload them again. Someone else wouldve to do it should that become necessary. Thats what sharing is for, isnt it? 😉
Right now Im listening to it and I really have to say that its a blast! I dont want to flatter myself but Im really happy with this: it now has colour, real dynamics, a marvellous stage impression, the violins now sound like violins (and the synth like a synth), the bass is deep and very strong but not droning and the synthetic elements are very well integrated. Its pretty rare that I happen to like one of my releases and so I felt the need to write it here.
Do that and please get back and write what youre thinking, Id be interested in your opinion.
Interesting.. It makes me want to hear your take on a Zimmer score session, like Pirates of the Caribbean or something.
Second
Back cover? Its inside the archive. In fact, you can choose between three.

Ugh… the first cannot be improved, Ive tried some years ago. But it might be different with the sessions which I havent downloaded. The second sounds pretty much OK, as does the third. Now the fourth is easily the best sounding so that wouldnt need improvement. And I dont like these scores much so I probably wont do them, sorry.
Everthing technical is explained in the first post. Kgray’s version were sessions. Those are not mastered, meaning they arent ready for casual listening. Mastering prepares these sessions for official release by doing volume corrections, equalizing, dynamic alteration/control, editing/obmitting, sometimes remixing and removal of errors. All of this is done to – ideally – improve the cohesion of the score. That way it can be enjoyed without the need to turn the volume knob much, to skip a track ahead (because of long pauses), you can listen to it without interruptions and youll understand everything. Its generally done to ‘tighten’ the impression of a score, to improve its flow. All of this was done by me for this release.

What about TRON Legacy? The sound’s probably pretty good already, but outside of the shrine, I have seen that one in ALAC.
Ill do TRON: Legacy but it might take a while… I think Ive downloaded the lossless files… but I dont know exactly right now. Still, would like to do ‘Signs’, ‘Small Soldiers’ and ‘Chamber of Secrets’ first.
Weren’t those confirmed to be lossy WAV’s files?
Can you please, if you take requests, remaster The Dark Knight (I don’t think those sessions were ever mastered) & The Dark Knight Rises? 😀
Yes, they were. But I can do something about it 😉

You’re doing a great service remastering all these scores, Sonic.
Can you please, if you take requests, remaster The Dark Knight (I don’t think those sessions were ever mastered) & The Dark Knight Rises? 😀
Thats easy: no, never 🙂
Yes, i love the Score of Small Soldier & i hope you upload your Deluxe Edtion soon. 😉

Links don’t work for me. 🙁
Youre the first to report this, I have no idea why it isnt working for you. I always test my uploads by downloading them and I didnt have any problems whatsoever.
Well done sonic!
oh almost forgot. The merged tracks are a nice touch and compliment the master especially ‘Chase Across DC’ and ‘Garroted & Aerial Inquisition’ which merges into ‘Go Get ‘Em’. 😉

… Didn’t I told and explained to him long and large already ?!
Oh, well. Now he’s sure. Lol

Just to let you know ive just listened to it. A very thrilling listen. TBH i did enjoy the sessions more apposed to the commercial release and thought ‘well this is all i need’ and now after listening to your deluxe i now think ‘This is the ultimate listen’. Everything just seems more alive and colourful. Bass is tight and instruments are a lot more vibrant (if thats the right word). The soundstage is absolutely top notch and its powerful without being overpowering. The sessions now sound like the music is smothered and desperate to escape.
Well done sonic!

Thank you. And thats exactly what I always thought: smothered and desperate to escape. Very good expression!
You really like the merged tracks? I was unsure about ‘Garroted’ & ‘Go Get ‘Em’ but it worked so nicely… both have the same tonality and it seems as if they were composed to be crossfaded because the outro of one track had the same length as the intro of the other track. So I thought… improve the flow and combine them.
Probably coz the files have been deleted now?? Trust me, I have nothing against you man. Jdownloader reports it as "offline". 😉
I really dont know what happens with other systems… but I have exactly seven filehosters still hosting the files, theyre online (using JDownloader).
great, great work.
If you don’t mind, what is the name of the font you use for "The Deluxe Edition" text on your covers? I’d like to use it on some of the covers I make but haven’t been able to figure it out.
I love your releases, wish I knew more technical terms to describe them but, I don’t. Your stuff sounds better then the offical releases to my ears so thanks for the time and effort.
6 hosts. I can confirm both parts have links still living and active at Freakshare, Bitshare, SendMyWay, Get,It, Gamefront and Hipfile. I just went through and tested the link for both parts on all of them.

Thank you. And the font I use for the ‘Deluxe Edition’ is called "Federation", a very simple (and I assume of low quality) font initially developed for the Star Trek movies featuring the Next Generation.

Thanks, dear, for confirming it.
If you ever want to do a Williams, Far and Away might be a good one, the unreleased material from the V2 boot, is lower quality than the OST, but there is no really bad hiss in it.
Both ge.tt links just worked for me.
And, obviously, the links still work. I used the ge.tt links.
Digital gain control degrades the sources’ quality? Darling, we dont live in the ’80s anymore. Today, we have 32 bit floating point (in my case 64 bit floating point) mastering equipment and software.
Besides, the gain control would be the least of your problems when it concerns my releases.
I use (not necessarily in that order and not all the time):
– EQ
– stereo phase tools
– resampler
– dynamic compressors
– denoisers
– declickers
– etc.
Those are much, much more hurtful than a mere digital volume control (if used incorrectly).

It seems that the only link working is GE.TT
Why don’t original Music Labels do a good-work?
Huge thanks for sharing it, my friend!!! 🙂

Thank you for the mp3. And thanks Sonic for this work 🙂
I was never into James Newton Howard. Never, I disliked his music… but when I saw this movie back in 2010… I was shocked the soundtrack was him.
Damn I love this soundtrack
Oh, but I’m still here 🙂
@Mr. Slicey: Thank you very much!!
