Phew, here it finally is: A.I. Artificial Intelligence, composed by John Williams in 2001 for the movie of the same name by Steven Spielberg. For this Deluxe Edition I used my official CD and the 2-CD Academy Promo, the latter one in pristine lossless quality. The Promo was provided by a very good friend who went through great obstacles to obtain the files for me in lossless quality. As you all may know both the promo and the official were a complete mess. John Williams in his usual attempt to create a coherent listening experience while presenting everything musically important on one CD curiously failed here with both versions IMO. This score is much improved by chronological order, it plays much better that way. On the official CD there were two version of the song ‘For Always" interspersed throughout the CD, perhaps to make it financially more appealing to mainstream audiences. Well, it didnt work and on this version you can finally see what Williams actually attempted to do with his whole score: to create a cold and bleak vision of the future, not even the overly sweet ending feels out of place – it creates a somehow false sweetness. There is much irony to be found in this score and I must admit that I now think that it really is one of John Williams greatest works.
What I did (in the highest quality of course using 32/176.4 files and the best DSPs):
– matching the sound of the bootleg to the sound of the official CD
– ordering all the tracks according to this list: A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (2001) Complete Cue List JOHN WILLIAMS Fan Network JWFAN (http://www.jwfan.com/?p=3598) (this list apparently doesnt describe the music used in the movie, it seems to use the cues as Williams intended them to be used)
– mixing and editing all the tracks according to the list above
– removing clicks in all the bootleg tracks (not audible over loudspeakers but very audible through headphones)
– reducing the dynamic of the music to make it more coherent (amplifies noise but greatly helps listening experience – its MUCH more coherent and fluid now)
– remastering the sound into something with slightly more colour and brilliance, the sound of the score should reflect the composition which is cold, intellectual, very post-modern and minimalistic
– some tracks were combined into bigger tracks when possible, I also kept two or three of the suites J.W. created because they were chronological and made sense
I wanted the cover to reflect the scores’ intellectual approach – so I mainly used white which made sense to me when regarding on how many levels the score works (white is a mixture of all colours combined) and grey, sometimes with a slight hint of green (as you can witness above). White, grey and green have been used on the outside of the cover while the inside is much darker and much more colourful – the movie looked bleak on the outside but at its core used a strong and warm romanticism… sort of like an iPod with life in it. Nevertheless, softness and blur are employed as a means to dissolve the lines between rationality and emotion, also to make some pictures look more ‘glassy’ or creepy. This is also the first time I used a filmstill from the movie as my preferred front cover (the left one in the upper row). If you dont like it you can use one of the other three covers: most of the time they reflect the recent design of the BluRay while one is an exact copy of the official cover (only with white instead of black).

P.S.: As always, dont ask for mp3s. Make them yourself. If you dont know how google it, this should be common knowledge these days. When the archives are gone, theyre gone, I wont upload them again. Someone else wouldve to do it should that become necessary. Thats what sharing is for, isnt it? 😉
ps: that top left cover is fantastic, is there a high res in the DL?
[edited: to answer my own question, yes, yes there are scans and they’re great. Looking forward to checking this out later, thanks again]
Agreed. This came at a period when Williams was trying new things. This score along with Minority Report was Williams being more adventurous then what we were used to hearing. Perhaps he was challenging himself as well as the audience. It was certainly thrilling to hear.
This score has been a favorite of mine as well. Hard to imagine this was written along the same time as Harry Potter as the two couldn’t be more different. Both brilliant in their respective ways.
Thanks for the work Sonic. I know it’s going to sound amazing.

Dont be so sure about my work. A friend of mine said to me while listening to it: "I never noticed the noisefloor before". Hes right, its really loud. But I wouldnt wanna remove it since it sounds so natural and removing it would have taken away a lot of information.
I agree on the score, it really is a marvellous work. To find that out I had to do this edition, before I wasnt aware and it has been a long time since Ive last the movie on my DVD.
Yes the inclusion of the two pop songs (which never went anywhere pop-chart wise) on the the OR was a bad calculation on somebody’s part. I guess they were hoping it would have been another "My Heart Will Go On." LOL.
This version sounds amazing. The piano cues are really pronounced.

Thank you. The piano indeed sounded muted on the official CD and I didnt like it. But its funny… the sonic signature I was trying to copy a bit was the one from ‘Attack of the Clones’ – its not the most balanced sound but very tasty nonetheless and one of the best sounding CDs around. The mud you refer to is probably the huge amount of reverbaration which can occasionally hinder detail and "raw" power of recorded music. Tintin for example has much less reverbaration and therefore much better instrument separation and detail – even though the stage impression suffers. Its really about the balance… with Episode II Shawn Murphy was trying to imitate the sound engineered by Eric Tomlinson for the first Star Wars movies – and this is audible because I think he succeeded and even improved on that particular sound.
Anyway, Im glad you like it!

Word of advice: avoid Queenshare if at all possible. This is to the downloaders, too. There are about 50 pop-ups, 5 or so videos, etc. just before you even get a chance to navigate around the site.
Id use JDownloader. But in the future Ill avoid Queenshare, thats for sure.
Thank you very much, once again.
And the top left cover is absolutely amazing, i will definitely use that one
And another word of advice – Hipfile – no matter what i clicked i ended up with a download of that ilivid thing. Gave up after a while… GE.TT worked very well though, one click and the download was running at good speed
Youre the first to notice ;). I did not include it because the score gets very syrup-y at its end and without the movie the listener drowns in sugar. And my aim always is to create a version of a score that one can listen to in one go without the need to jump a track ahead. I really felt that the music was redundant so the End Credits were gone. But you can include it if you like, the 2nd CD does have enough space left.
BTW, I really appreciate that youre all thanking me so nicely. I hoped youd have fun!

Hehehe I understand what you mean. But I like that feeling when you see the movie. You know, when the tears wanna go out from your eyes! I personally believe it’s a John William’s modus operandi to play with audience feelings in the End Credits, many movies have this pattern, like Jaws, after all the action the movie ends with a nice, soft and sweet cue. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial have this pattern too.
In your Deluxe Edition the pattern it’s missing. But your work it’s impressive. It doesn’t follow exactly the movie because you know, some cues are missing even from the Academy Promo and the bootleg, but I really enjoyed listening. Thanks for your comment!
Youre right. I personally dont mind – but if some people do they can still add the desired tracks. They wont sound like the rest and will be missing on the back cover but in my experience this isnt a problem most of the time. And I noticed the missing tracks too. But since I rarely use tracks from DVD/BluRay coming from the surround channels or from something similar because of awful sound quality I have to call this edition ‘expanded’ which it surely is compared to the official version.
Your work is awesome! The amount of music in the official relase was awful, and the DVD Audio version was terrible, just upmixed from Stereo. This can be the definitive edition =D
Just expanded 😉 But thanks. Youre right, the DVD Audio was indeed horrible. I bought it right before I started working on this edition… I wanted to have the best quality at least for some tracks and a reference to model all other files after. But I returned it an hour later because not even the 2-channel part was high definition. Even though the music probably was recorded either that way or analogue. The DVD Audio was a fake while they could have made it really good. Disappointing.
Anyway, Im glad you like it!

Now that I’ve had a day to think on it, I think I might have used the wrong word when I referred to AOTC as sounding like "mud." I think SOFT might be a better term. The CD does have some great audio statements – a few blasts in Chase Through Courasant and the End Credits track sounds incredible. It is certainly nowhere near ROTJ awfulness.
But this isn’t about AOTC. It’s about this extraordinary version of A.I. You know where one can really hear the difference in sound quality? The Track "The Mecha World & Let’s be Friends." It’s like new life has been infused into this incredible piece of music.
I know what you mean but I think in the case of E.T. the end credits music was more to make people smile after uncontrollable crying for 5 minutes. In the case of Schindler’s List though I think the intention was for the viewer (and listener) to collect oneself from the previous 3 hours they were witness to. I always enjoy JW’s end credits suites because you never know which direction he’ll go. Sometimes he’ll go soft for an action movie (Minority Report) and sometimes he’ll go exuberant for a somber drama (Empire Of The Sun.) One never knows when it comes to maestro Williams.
You wont need to listen to your DVD-A – this will sound much better, I promise.
Funny you should mention Tron….. I brought it up in Sonic’s "Salt" thread (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f92/salt-deluxe-edition-james-newton-howard-flac-126896/#post2263197).
It’s apparent from the amount of detail and the depth you’ve gone to that this has been a ‘Labor of Love’ for you 🙂
"A.I." has long been one of my favorites among JW’s many favorite scores, and it will be terrific to listen to your interpretation of it.
Thank You so much, SonicAdventure 🙂

All thanks to Sonic for his many great shares.
I have one question: why this sudden resparked interest in the score? I mean, this score has been released by me one and a half year ago and some people thanking kooke and ribonucleic have been here much longer. This isnt criticism, Id just like to know if there was any reason for the hesitation when it first came out (so that I can anticipate it for my next release).
I can’t speak for the others, of course. But after coldblackice bumped your Bourne Supremacy Deluxe Edition yesterday, I remembered how great the one for King Kong was and figured I’d review your post history to see which others I might want.*
I don’t remember if I spotted this one when it debuted but I would have skipped it if I had – since I hated the movie so much. But after reading the Filmtracks review that claimed it’s what a Kubrick/Williams collaboration would have sounded like, I had to hear for myself.
* I was too late for The Fury, whose thread I just bumped.
That explains it. Thanks for the answer.

That explains it too. Thank you. BTW, I think you wont be successful with The Fury, it didnt create much interest anyway.
About A.I.: just think, that David the Mecha dies at the end of the movie… the whole movie will look much bleaker. Could have actually been meant this way as this kind of ambiguous ending would be typical for Spielberg.
Someone from the thread was kind enough to fix me up.
Haven’t seen the thread before, so thanks a lot to the re-uploader, too!
One of my favorite Williams-scores, I looove it’s beautiful mother/fairy-theme!! 🙂
The details are very important when is not an official release.
I would like to hear a stuff like this (in a "deluxe" way) in:
– the sugarland express
– dracula
– the witches of eastwick
all of them from Williams, of course.
Cheers.

… and what about "Close encounters…"?
There is a bootleg which claims to have 15 unreleased cues and alternate tracks but all i could get in internet has a very poor sound quality.
Regards.
Your Avatar for sure fits.

I agree, too many threads and not enough time to read all the details of each stuff.

Didnt even see this… sorry.
Ive never heard ‘Sugarland Express’ nor ‘Dracula’. ‘Witches of Eastwick’… well, Ive thought about it. Stupid enough, Ive sold my complete score long ago. And frankly, the quality of that complete version has always been good enough. Yes, there are some issues but those can be ignored IMO.
‘Close Encounters’… I thought it already was complete? Anyway, Im afraid that ‘early’ Williams isnt exactly my cup of tea.

Thank you once again Sonic for a great Deluxe Edition 😀
And thanks to ribonucleic for the re-up 🙂
Why would you need this? LaLaLand has released their own version which contains even more music and also might sound better (never heard it).
Never heard of it, I should check out llland store now… Thanks for response
I didn’t mean to be rude. But… in case one of my Editions gets superseeded by an official one, I recommend that one instead. Since most of the times my versions are turned redundant (exception would be Superman Returns, LLL released a very awful sounding version).
And I found llland version here on forums already… Good night 😉
