Walking in Game Stop the other day something unexpected caught my eye. "Last Story? Sounds like a Final Fantasy knock off" I said to myself.. curios as to the company responsible I scanned the cover.. "XSEED… ex-SEED.. could you be more obvious" I continue ignorantly thinking… And then I turn my attention to the front of the cover and right in the middle staring me in the face is something I had not thought I would ever see…

Story by Hironobu Sakaguchi
Music by Nobou Uematsu

First of all this is not an official review and absolutely no spoilers are included int his post except for maybe a couple game mechanics.

Last Story was released for the Wii in the US on August 14, 2012 developed by Mistwalker (founders: Hironobu Sakaguchi, Nobou Uematsu, and Kensuki Tanaka) and produced by XSEED (founded by several ex-squeenix members). The game opens up in an action based interactive story mission that doubles as a tutorial. The combat style of this game is different from other RPGs in that you simply run up to an enemy and your character will automatically swing his sword at the enemy. Despite this, somehow the game evokes a feeling of full involvement that cannot be accurately expressed in words. Throughout the gameplay the characters interact verbally with each other, complimenting or teasing each other during missions. Companions that do not join you as you play the game through different missions still seem to bring out a feeling of realism in that when you meet up with them in the tavern they share stories of their adventures while you were away.

The graphics of the game are certainly impressive for a Wii game but in comparison to other Final Fantasy games the graphics are not quite as good as FFXII but not quite as bad as FFX. Interesting to note that this is a Wii-exclusive game with no known plans of ever releasing the game to other major consoles.

The story of The Last Story is a tribute to the imagination of Hironobu Sakaguchi. XSEED officially announced that it was the most successful game they have ever published. I suspect that this marks the beginning of a new gripping Final series as well as dark days to come for the Final Fantasy franchise. The king of story telling has reemerged to claim his throne on the seat of RPG-Game Developing.
