Space Battleship Yamato 2199 – OST Part 1 – Akira Miyagawa et al (320k)

From the remake that is raising the barr for all remakes, the spectacular Yamato 2199, come this equaly spectacular soundtrack. Akira Miyagawa, composer and son of Hiroshi Miyagawa, the composer for the original series, has elevated his father’s work to new heights, retooling what has always been one of the highlights of this classic anime, it’s music, taking themes that have lived in the hearts of fans for over 38 years and making them sound fresh and innovative. Blend in a few new themes, including rousing anthems for both the UNCF (United Nations Cosmo Force) and Gamilas, and you get this fine new entry into the vast musical archive of Space Battleship Yamato.

This Part 1 covers roughly episodes 1 to 8 and, as far as i can tell, only 3 or 4 small cues are missing from this CD, made up by the fact that 3 of those that are in the CD have yet to be used in the show.

A small note: in the CD, tracks 9 and 15 have the exact same name (in japanese), being that they are 2 versions of the same theme. To "fix" this, i’ve renamed track 15 as "Sorrowful Okita" as it reflects the events of the scene where it is first used.

Almost through a second listen. Lots of fun to be had here with an old style score. The orchestra plays some nice themes and the score has a bit of a 60s feel at times and sometimes an 80s feel. It is like listening to an older Yamato score.

For those not in the loop about the new 2199 series, even though the remake of season one is still far from over (if they keep the present pace it’ll take about a year for the last volume to come out), Gatlantis (or the Comet Empire, if you preffer) ships have already appeared briefly in episode 10 (a wreaked fighter is seen briefly in the Sargasso Sea, as Yamamoto’s fighter flies by it) and will appear in what seems to be a Domel related flashback in episode 11 (several cruiser taking fire), so the possibility that a remake of season two, though not official, is a deffinite possibility. At least they’re paving the way to it. And who knows, maybe when that flashback occurs we’ll get a hint of Comet Empire related music. 😀

I am so ready for more awesomeness. Especially when Chapter 6 gets released on Blu-Ray at the end of July.

Episodes 19 and 20 have poped online and… WOW!!! The Rainbow Star Cluster battle must be seen to be believed. Still waiting for Part 2 to arrive. Damned post! Lets hope it doesn’t take as long as the package that i got this morning. Just so you get an idea of how long it took, it left Japan on MARCH 19th!!! Yes, MARCH!!! Granted, it is highly unusual for such a delay to occur. Guess Yamamoto had some Garmillas shooting to do before it got here (yes, it was the 1/72 Cosmo Zero Alpha 2 model). 😀
