You gotta remember, it wasn’t I who did the original MP remaster. 😉
I was never too fond of Assett1’s earlier remasters. He seemed to just enhance the tracks rather than go for a correct sound quality. I think I am gonna stick to this overall sound of the remaster. I’ve been experimenting with some re-synthesis for a while. I got the process down now (basically run the audio through a program that takes the tracks, and instead of just rendering them, takes and completely synthesizes the track like an analog synthesizer would do) but didn’t run the demo track through that yet.
If you’d like, I can upload another track with that re-synthesis on it. Makes it feel less like a rip and more like I had complete control over the original files.
By the way, Arigeitsu159, i live in Kerrville, Texas. Did you go to Amon Tobin’s performance a few weeks ago?
On a side note – I will probably take another look at the Prime 1 soundtrack and tweak a few more things.

Oh my apologies. I thought you were the same person. The similar in user name’s through me off a bit.
Yeah, if you want to upload another track, that’d be cool. Be interested in hearing the Samus Vs Metroid Prime (Spider) track if you have that available.
I’m sorry, I have no idea who Amon Tobin is to be quite honest… 🙁
Sir, I am greatly interested in the Metroid Prime Soundtrack. Since it’s first reveal by Assett1, I’ve been dying to hear the complete package. And with the release of Harmony of a Hunter 101% run next month, the release of this soundtrack spurs my interest more and more.

May I ask what ‘Harmony of a Hunter 101%’ is? Sounds intriguing.
Harmony of a Hunter is a Metroid Prime remix project I believe. I have the first version.

Not sure if that’s a compliment 😉
Amon Tobin is AMAZING.
Also, to keep your hopes up, this project should be finished by New Year. 🙂
After the Metroid Prime Trilogy, which do you intend to remaster next?

Going to take another look at Elder Scrolls Morrowind, and after that, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time (game rip) and Majora’s Mask (game rip).
For the N64 Zelda gamers, are you planning to remaster the USF files (chip tunes) or rips by other authors? If you are going for the USF, the ones that exist play at a somewhat slower tempo than the CD soundtracks, maybe they are ripped from the PAL versions? If you are going to do other rips like MP3s or FLAC, it would be nice if you make them loop once or twice so they won’t feel too short and unsatisfying.
All I would like to hear is the original music in the best quality possible from the original hardware. Any noise or artifacts include.
Just don’t make it too loud. I’d say anything more than -10dBfs RMS is excessive.

Excellent. Very much looking forward to this Trilogy project. It will def sound nice in my iPod for my workouts. 🙂
Uh…hardly. Assett1 was an immature 17 year old (literally) who was severely abrasive in his posts. See thread here: http://forums.ffshrine.org/f72/elder-scrolls-iii-morrowind-ost-remaster-v3-88897/#post1679354
He was also delusional enough to believe the Morrowind "master" tapes were cassette tapes….see same thread.
Mr.Assett2 claims to have been 1’s mentor. If so, I sure hope you don’t carry the same cancerous attitude he had when any sort of question arose. http://forums.ffshrine.org/f72/elder-scrolls-iii-morrowind-soundtrack-digitally-remastered-82383/#post2098767
"Honestly, I would not go for Re-synthesis unless you manually reprogram the original music in MIDI and use 99% sound alike synth sounds but in better quality.

The re synthesis is basically to even out the balance between details, noise, and tonal quality. When the 3 are even, that is when you really have a musically higher quality track. My re-synthesis does exactly that.
My goal is to take you inside the hardware. Into the file details, the nuances, the quality. Be able to hear every little insignificant instrument, sound, reverb, echo. Everything. I find it is better to go inside what the hardware creates rather than be in a room with it hearing the hardware. Musically, I can bet that the composers used the certain hardware they used for that reason. To put the listener in the sound rather than the hardware. It’s an argument that has been going on since the start of recording. In the room with the musician, or the musician’s point of view?
Also, on the loudness comment, I feel that specifying a limit creates a musical boundary. As you may have noticed, there is a tonal contrast between tracks that are as close as 2db apart. Musically, I feel that I will go to the volume that I feel tonally compliments the mix. But I will take your comment into consideration and try and find the optimum RMS around -10dbfs.
Thanks for the input.

I will be using the USF files. Is the CD different samples? I basically want to take the game audio and make it into a huge remaster. As if you’re playing the game and listening to the soundtrack in-game than as a CD. It’s a hard concept to explain, but basically, I want exactly what is in the game and not the CD interpretation of the music because I believe musically that if the original composer wanted it to sound like that, he would have done it in the game audio.
I am also planning to do a 2x loop and a 10sec fade out.
I am ripping from the US version BTW.
Also, as a side note, I intend to release all my remasters at 320kbps bit-rate mp3 with no low pass filter.
I want the quality to be over the top, and I want it to be portable. I find the above is a perfect balance.

Don’t worry, I don’t. Assett1 always came off as an ego centered individual. Sadly he did over-react many times. We had a few complications in teaching such as when he thought his mix was better than mine. We would argue for hours before he would let me show him what he did wrong, but he’s matured a lot since then. College does something to you for sure.
As for those "master tapes", they were loss-less source and had frequencies up to 35khz when I examined them. He wasn’t lying, but the fact that he had them on cassette instead of digital is beyond me. (Who the fuck uses cassettes anymore?) Apparently he liked the sound of cassette and wanted that "analog sound". When I explained to him about how he could have just ran the digital files through some of my analog hardware, he was extremely embarrassed.
We all have to learn at some point. I do think that he captured the tracks quite well on his release and I can’t complain too much.
I will do it better though. I will use the official soundtrack and completely remaster it. You should look forward to it. 🙂 It’s gonna be mind-blowing.
Just don’t rush. I and most people, including you I expect, would rather have a worthy release, that you think "Phew, I finally finished it", rather than some half-assed "Eh, it’s not bad, I’ll just throw it out there" release 😛
I do wonder… why did Nintendo only release an OST for the first Metroid Prime game, but not the 2nd or 3rd?

If not, I’ll try another host (as MediaFire sucks sometimes)
I don’t know if "you" still need them, but they are the lossless rips directly from the GameCube ROMs that "you" e-mailed me for last week. The first 5 are Echoes, the last 4 are Corruption.
I want the quality to be over the top, and I want it to be portable. I find the above is a perfect balance.
I understand the appeal of portability. There are some obsessive audiophiles though (such as myself) who would still like the lossless version for our PC rigs. After uploading the mp3 versions (which I’m looking forward to!) do you think you might consider uploading the FLAC version as well? Perhaps in torrent format if mediafire is too much of a hassle?
P.s. I truly appreciate all of the time and effort you’ve put into this project. That fact alone that you’re doing it is more than any of us could have asked. Keep up the fantastic work! Take your time! and good luck!
Let me start by answering all of your questions first.
1. Thanks Koopa for the links. They were given a the perfect time for this Christmas break! I will be in the studio prolly the entire break finishing up this release! It’s going to blow you away!
2. Portability WILL be an issue due to the track size. There are hours and hours of audio from all three. I might choose to fit each game onto 2 disks, making a 6 disk release. If I put that into FLAC, that would be around, 1.8gb. I don’t have the internet connection or the time to leave my rig on that long. If I compress them into mp3, the quality will not be lost as much as you think and in my opinion, no quality is lost at all. I use a dither setting at 14-bit giving around 72db worth of dynamic range. The limit of a 320kbps mp3 is around -80db, so no dynamic range will be lost. The dither I use works so well as you can hear audio well into -100db inside the dither so NO dynamic range is lost. In addition, the mp3 encoder I use has a low-pass filter but I use an extremely high quality 16khz brick-wall cut-off inside the mastering process so there is no quality loss when it is encoded. Also, my tracks are mastered to peak at -0.4db so there is no clipping involved in the playback. I have made sure that you have the highest quality files on your PC or iPod while still being portable. I will also have everything tagged and ready for playback on any system that supports mp3. I don’t want you to feel that you are listening to an inferior quality track nor do I want you to feel that there is a chance you could be hearing it in higher quality. I want to give the highest possible quality with no down-falls of any kind. I wish I could provide FLACs for this release, but that would be too difficult if not impossible! :'(
3. The project will be finished this December and released at the end (around Christmas) or New Year’s day!
4. The end of the year isn’t quite here! 😉
5. Here is an up-to-date demo of what’s been going on under the roof. (This is for you DragonIIDX)
Temple Grounds 2.mp3 (http://www.mediafire.com/?41qom779w4c6a0n)
As you can tell, I’m on the 2nd part of the trilogy and this is what the rest of Echoes sounds like sonically as well as Prime 1. (I will be working on Prime 3 all next week) You wanted to be inside the sound and hear the actual hardware used? Tell me how the above sounds to you guys! The entire process has been re-done countless times and I have finally decided on what you hear in the provided link.
6. Keep a lookout on the status of this project!!!! 😉

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to clarify about the encoding…
I still havn’t decided on which encoder I like the best yet for this track. Each encoder has a slightly different tone and I’m trying to find the best one that matches the tone of this project. LAME seems to be getting brighter. I’m still experimenting with bit-rate and CBR vs. VBR. I’ll probably decide on VBR though. We’ll see. The demo is 320kbps Fraunhofer IIS.

I’m actually thinking of setting up a donation for this project for people who want to. 🙂
I’m glad you are because I would consider donating also. Especially for all the hard work it is for re-mastering and for how many songs there are.
One more question for you about your Trilogy project. Are you going to include tracks that were exclusive to the actual Trilogy game from the Wii version? Examples are the "Bryyo Cliffs" and "Reptilicus Battle"?

What Koopa said. I’m using the original disks for this, not the trilogy. That would be cheating! 😉
So no, I’m not including trilogy-only tracks. Sorry.
So no, I’m not including trilogy-only tracks. Sorry.
No worries. Just thought I’d ask. 🙂 Very much looking forward to this being completed.
He means he’s using the GameCube discs and not the Wii discs… why that’s not cheating I don’t know.
I’m not saying it’s not cheating to mean it is cheating, I’m not saying it’s not cheating to mean that NOT doing it… is NOT cheating….. <_< Um, you’ll get it in a few days (understand the statement — and get the soundtrack hopefully)
IIRC from what assett1 said, there’s Majora’s Mask, Final Fantasies 7-9, I think Mr.Assett2 said about redoing Ocarina of Time? Apart from that, I’m not sure….
Maybe something like Goldeneye 64? That had (and still has) some pretty good tracks on IMO. And unless there’s a way of getting soundbanks in the form of DLS, or SF2, and using them to play the MIDIs in high quality, in the same way that GBAMusRiper works to give you higher quality GBA Music (with a few major flaws in that not all games work, and some that do don’t work properly in that case)….. but the point is, unless high quality samples + soundfonts + MIDIs from N64 ROMs is not possible… then Mr.Assett2 is the second best thing, I think.
But obviously it’s up to him what he does next….
And if he was to somehow ask for requests, well, if he’s unlucky enough, he might get too many requests to handle and then feel like he’s unable (or even BE unable) to fulfil all (or even just half) 😛
Anyway, er… Merry Christmas (if you live in the time zone of UTC-2, or further east, e.g. UTC-1, UTC, UTC+1 etc, since it’s 12:01 am in the UTC-2 timezone (whereever that is…)
I mean that instead of using the trilogy disk with all three of the game soundtracks on one disk, I’m using the original sources (All three disks). I’d consider using the trilogy soundtrack rip cheating because apparently the audio was redone for the trilogy and that everything was sorted etc. 50% of the work already done for me. 😛 So… Cheating… Yeh..

Real quick, once I get done with these tracks, I’m gonna have to have some help with tagging these tracks. Is there any way, Koopa, that you could give me a list of the names of the tracks in order that they appear in the rip? It would cut my time down on this project by 1/5. Thanks.
Track names from Metroid recon, though its for the original, probably the rest there too.
Music – Metroid Prime (Metroid Recon) (http://metroid.retropixel.net/mprime/music/)
"Here we present a collection of the game’s music in crisp 160kbps MP3 format"
Wow, you couldn’t have gone for 320 kbps? Not even 256? Not even 192? No, you go for 160 kbps?
But we’re not downloading them so who cares?
The thing is, are those only from the OST? And does the OST have ALL the tracks?
There are NO soundtracks for 2 or 3, so there are NO official titles.
Therefore, hopefully these will work:
Music – Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (Metroid Recon) (http://metroid.retropixel.net/mprime2/music/)
Music – Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Metroid Recon) (http://metroid.retropixel.net/mprime3/music/)
Years ago? IMO that shouldn’t have been an excuse. It’s not like 320 kbps was invented only a few years ago.
That’s not the point. It’s about being appreciative about what’s available without acting like a queen about it.

You say midnight, but which midnight? In otherwords, what timezone?
For example, right now, where I am, it’s about 3 minutes past midnight.
Hey Asset,
I know you’re going back and redoing the tracks in FLAC format without the mp3 optimization. My question is if I were to encode these in mp3, there wouldn’t be much of a difference without optimization you would have done, correct? Not that it matters, but just wanted to get your thoughts on it.

If you take the FLAC files and encode them to mp3, it will be of lower quality than the mp3 optimized version as the mp3 optimization tweaks mainly take the limitations of the mp3 encoder and adjust the track to the limitations. ie; the 16khz cut-off and the clipping.
Oh well, it’ll be worth it 😀

Not only the converting crap, but I have no way of tagging these tracks, so you probably have to do that too… Unless you want to wait a bit after I release the FLAC for me to tag and release an mp3 version of the album.
I have no way of tagging FLAC tracks. I’m sure somebody can figure it out and post it on the official thread though…
I will tag the mp3 release in a few days after the official flac release though.
I see. I may wait for your mp3 album upload in that case then. I don’t want to take away any enhancements that you may add even if it is mp3. Unlike most folks, I’m not a complete lossless whore and will take mp3 since it’s more portable. Plus, my hearing is probably shot anyway. Thank you for the info. 🙂
I’m in the same boat as you. Well, minus the hearing loss. I’m fine with mp3 as long as there are no artifacts all the way down the the dither.

I was waiting for my processing and I checked out your bandcamp. VERY good chiptunes my friend!
On a side note, I’d be very interested in mastering your music 🙂
MP3tag also works with FLAC files.
Course 🙂 Well… you can just go to metroid recon and compare and tag the tracks. That’s what I’m gonna do for the mp3 release…

Well, I have to run each song through my process chain here in my studio. I have corruption and 10 songs left in echoes to run through. Compress and tag which adds an hour. Then to upload, which will take around 2 hours, so if I pull an all-nighter and get this all finished, I’d say in…. eh…. 5 hours?

Thank you so much! This puts the release time back a bit though.
Ha, j/k!
So it’ll be all uploaded around 3 o clock?!

You goddamn better stay productive! >:( Seriously, I’m thankful you did this. But srsly, man. Work it through! Srsly. Srsly.
I got rid of all the pops and clicks, the clipping, mono tracks given a stereo image, fixed the cheap digital distortion, synthesized frequencies up to the nyquist limit for 44.1khz sample rate, leveled out the volume of the tracks, synthesized into 24-bit and once all that was complete and the tracks were all double checked for cleanliness, they were ran through my mastering process which includes over 12 pieces of hardware, down to 16-bit, then eventually compressed, tagged, packaged, and uploaded.
The reason it’s delayed is not only because I have to reprocess everything again without the mp3 optimization, but I made a few changes regarding volume and the actual process chain is quite heavy giving each process approx. 2 mins per track. And it’s all manual so there’s more time there. But like I said, everything should be up and ready by midnight tonight so when you wake up tomorrow, everything should be up!

Well, that might be a problem. I think it’s because I have nothing to do while these tracks play through so I just keep sitting here refreshing my Facebook and this thread.
Men my age don’t play half-life.
So my son tells me!
Too old to use digital hardware, my dear friend.
Not really ;P
My son is only 10.
I play it with him 🙂 I made a deal with my wife that if he has a bad dream from it, no more of that game. 😛 Works for me and everybody is happy.
And we don’t play the second. Only the first 🙂
We’ve only played it once. He hasn’t seen the headcrabs yet. 😛

Yay! But go back to HL2! That game is awesome. But take care once you get to Ravenholme. The whole time you’re there, it becomes a survival horror game! The whole game is awesome, especially once you control the antlions!
I prolly won’t let my son play now that you’ve told me, but I might just buy the game for my studio PC when he’s at school and the wife is playing cello. (Which is 75% of my day)
AH, SHIT! LET HIM PLAY! IT’S A REALLY GOOD GAME! Don’t be the bad guy!

Just to be different, I might just let him try a few minutes of it. 😉
Guess I get to wait for the Mp3 release T_T
You’re gonna hate to hear this, but the compilation was compressed as one big archive, so it’s either the 3gb, 16-part download, or nothing. There was a reason I wanted to do mp3, but people wanted FLAC regardless of file size. I’ll be working on the mp3 release over the next few days. It should be roughly around 800mb for the mp3 version.
I had to save bandwidth and compress as a single file. I want to get this out as soon as possible… Sorry guys… :/

Ah… I see. When I saw you say it was on MediaFire I assumed it would have been split but that’s ok. It would be better for me anyway to download 800MB rather than 3GB since my Internet cuts out large file downloads sometimes. I have no problem waiting a few extra days for the mp3 release.
The thing is, MediaFire is a bitch. I had to take the single archive and split it into 200mb .rar files that join together. This also helps people who can’t download huge files anyway.
Yes. It also goes alot faster that way. By the way, do you have also album art to go with this release?
I rarely use the original soundtrack art. Most of the time there’s better art out there that better suits the music. If you’re not satisfied with it, PM me and I’ll make one for ya!
Cool thanks for the offer. I’ll keep that in mind.
But I am open for changes and such.

Would you care to give us a preview of it?

Sadly, no, and I have no idea where Assett1 got this cover art from. :/
It’s missing a freaking hyphen and I HATE that it says "Unofficial Fan"
Ugh… such a turn-off…

Where the heck… Nice work! Sadly though I’ve already packaged the art above already with the project. I’m thinking of using the wordless one for the project release thread though.

I know where I’ve seen that art. It’s the inside cover of the trilogy metal box!

I e-mail Assett1 a few days ago asking if he had gathered any artwork for the project and he sent me the one I posted. 😛

Well Mr.Assett2, I should probably hit the hay. I don’t want to keep you up all night seeing as you have a big release later today. 😉
Sorry if I insulted you a bit, didn’t mean to.
Again, thanks!
Nah, Its alright, different people have different tastes.

One hour till the release btw!
I’ll probably end up using your idea. I like it very much, ‘cept I’m not sure how I’m gonna tag the tracks with two album arts. I believe iTunes will let me, but never tried it.
