If you had a live music score playing in the background of your life…

Here’s a question for lovers of film / tv scores: If you (in your wildest fantasy) could have a live music score playing in the background of your life on a daily basis, who would you want to compose it? Some of you might think I would prefer Bernard Herrmann or Franz Waxman. Good choices, but no. In my own "fantasy" I would choose Alan Silvestri. His music delights and runs the gamet of emotions in any hilarious or dramatic situation. And he has great staccato music cues, which seem a bit reminiscent of films in the 1960’s. I noticed this on a recent acquisition of the What Women Want score. The man’s brilliant.

So who would you choose and why?

Hans Zimmer probably, or Sam from Corridor Digital.

Hans Zimmer, because I like him better than John Williams.
And Sam because he’s cool.

A hard decision for just one life.

On some days, I would like Hans Zimmer when I’m out and about. The travelling atmosphere always adds to the adventure.
On brooding days, I would think someone like Clint Mansell can really personify the mood.
On boring and mundane days, I always hear some new up-and-comer from Zimmer’s studios. Maybe Mark Isham. Maybe.
On happy days, I would like to think I hear Alan Silvestri or Theodore Shapiro.

I like all your choices and reasons for them. Perhaps you’re right. A different composer for each day might be an idea. Would surely add a lot of variety!

Hmmm.. Alan Silvestri for the happy days. Marco Beltrami for those moody gloomy days… Christopher Young would definitely share in that too. Hans Zimmer or John Williams or James Horner or even James Newton Howard could compose for my more adventurous days. Wow, there are so many wonderful composers past and present. It is terribly hard to choose!

JNH would surely have a place for adventure.
Even sad and lamenting days, he certainly knows how to work the string section of an orchestra.

Ambient/Electronic from Deus Ex 1/Human Revolution would be nice.

Ralph Vaughan Williams. ‘Nuff said.

If he was unavailable or unwilling, I’d do it myself.

Thomas Newman, not only because he is my favourite film score composer, but he could pull off anything in my life.

He could score my moments of desperation and happiness, my glorious days and those that are mellow. He’s really good at suspense, anticipation and fear.

In my darkest moments, something like White Oleander and The Player would come up. Lemony Snicket and his Pixar score have this wonderful otherwordliness, they make you feel as if you were in a different world, which sums up my life quite well. It’s the childlike naivet of his music, "a sense of epic emotion", a deep love for unconventionality and an ability to enjoy life, even if you have sunk too deep. Even if you think that nothing can bring you back, that your life is spiralling down. There still is a glimmer of hope.

Most of all, it is passion, a great passion for the weirdest things.

Yes, I am sure he’d be my choice.

If I had to pick one composer it’d have to be James Newton Howard. So many amazing scores. A close second would be Jerry Goldsmith though, Rudy is my personal favorite score ever.

During December I played Shirley Walker’s Black Christmas. I hate to admit it but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now that we’re in the New Year I’ve been listening a lot to Thomas Newman. Darn that Saving Mr. Banks score! It’s growing on me.

I’d have to go with Takenobu Mitsuyoshi (Daytona USA, Shenmue).

If I had a live music score playing in the background of my life…. Well, I heard that didn’t go so well for Noriega so, melodious silence is just fine by me.
