It is VERY strange that after all this time the recording of MYSTERIOUS MOUNTAIN conducted by Fritz Reiner & the Chicago Symphony back in the 1950s is STILL the best, even though the sound quality is dated. You can’t beat this. It contains all the ethereal, magical quality of a tone poem painting- a special place just out of reach but forever calling to your imagination. Deeply beautiful. You’d be a dope to purchase the Schwarz & Seattle Symphony version and you’d be a dope to pass up on THIS link.

Will certainly want to check this out. The Living Presence recordings are so rich are warm. Most of these during the 50s and early 60s I would say, and they indeed hold up terrifically for sophisticated ears of our day. Thank you for posting this. I wish to explore Hovhaness’ works, as this one seems to come highly recomended.

I went through a period where I explored a great deal of Hovhaness… and discovered a very ‘little’ goes a long way. His most famous work: Mysterious Mountain (not his title) is his Symphony No. 2 (he wrote a zillion of ’em).

If you like the MYSTERIOUS MOUNTAIN symphony (Schwarz bzw. isn’t bad in this work, recorded in the composer’s presence), I definitely recommend some of his later symphonies, especially No.22 (City of Light) and No.50 (Mount St Helens), which are even more expressive. No.50 is available in a very fine version with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, again under Gerard Schwarz, on Telarc – which supplants his own earlier Delos version from Seattle. There are also many intriguing shorter works, like And God Created Great Whales.

Thanks for the post El Cid of this wonderful Fritz Reiner/Chicago Symphony Orchestra disc. I believe this is an RCA Living Stereo release rather than Mercury Living Presence. I much prefer these "old" analog recordings to any of the digital recordings of the last 30 years or so. Wow, Hovaness, Stravinsky, and Prokofiev, all on one album! What a great share; thanks so much! I think Hovaness should be much better known – he was awfully talented, especially when it came to big, mystical type things.

I’ve got the CD you’re talking about, with symphonies 22 and 50. Truly amazing work!
