This repackaged version doesn’t just have different artwork: reverb has been added to improve the original pressing’s dry sound, many tracks are combined, and short sections of music have been edited out – apparently at the request of Shire himself.

I remember this being one of the last/best of the Hollywood films influenced by the ‘New Wave’ cinema. It’s sort of strange now watching these late 60’s, early 70’s pictures because they went for an odd sense of verisimilitude. They had curious color design, sound design, even camera movement.

It took the ‘Godfather’ to move filmmakers back to a more traditional Hollywood approach.
