After several false starts I’ve finally managed to convert the (almost complete) soundtrack to LucasArts’ space simulator "TIE Fighter" from MIDI to audio, in a quality I’m actually quite happy with. The biggest chunk missing is the inflight music, which is very difficult to arrange as it consists of dozens of little snippets that get arranged in realtime during the game.
Still, Kusi81 did a great job with his inflight medley Ode to Tie (http://soundcloud.com/kusi81/ode-to-tie-x-6-game-tie), which right now is at version X-6. Looks like he’s going to improve on it further. It’s a great addition to my soundtrack!
I’ve used East West Quantum Leap Orchestra, East West Hollywood Brass and Garritan Personal Orchestra 4 in conjuction with Cockos’ Reaper for this.
The original soundtrack was composed by Michael Land, Clint Bajakian and Peter McConnell, using both original music and themes by John Williams.

edit: zomg, it’s better than I imagined! Great work!
Also, I’m not yet sure what comes next, as the existing rearragend version of "Dark Forces" is already very good. We’ll see.
I was just wondering why you went to all the effort, couldn’t you just have played the MIDI on your PC and "recorded what you can hear" using Audacity for example? Or you could have just plugged the speaker line-out into your line-in port and recorded that.
My version is more the "possibly intended" sound of the music, because if they had the ability to use a real orchestra when the game came out (and managed to make it work with iMuse), they’d probably gone that route.
Anyway, a lot more effort went into the making of this than just "press play and record". 😉
Take a bow for this!
