Jos Siqueira – Xang: Cantata Negra

Jos de Siqueira Lima (1907-1985)

Jos Siqueira was a man simply stunning. Conductor, composer and academic, was internationally recognized for their competence. Other than that, he served as a strong leadership in the music of Brazil, and even created several professional associations related to culture, including the Order of the Musicians of Brazil, International Artistic Society Club and Disco. Siqueira was born in Conceio, Valley Pianc, Paraiba, in 1907. His father was master of a marching band, and taught the young boy playing various instruments such as saxophone and trumpet. In adolescence, Jos Siqueira was playing in bands of various cities in the interior of Paraba. In 1927, he went to Rio de Janeiro join the troops that would fight the Prestes Column. Immediately, he entered the Military School Symphonic Band, as a trumpeter. In the 1920s, he studied composition with Francisco Braga and Walter Burle-Marx, and in 1933, majored in composition and conducting. His career as a conductor was brilliant. He was also conductor of major orchestras of the United States, Canada, France, Portugal, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Russia and other countries. He conducted in the United States, as the Symphony orchestras of Philadelphia, Detroit, Rochester. In France, he conducted the Orchestre Radio-Symphonique, Paris, and Rome, the Rome Symphony. In Brazil, he just founded the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra in 1940, the Symphonic Orchestra of Rio de Janeiro in 1949, the Symphonic Orchestra of Recife, the National Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra of Brazil. In 1969 he was retired by the military dictatorship, reportedly because he was a Democrat. It was forbidden to teach, conduct and record. The military regime also claimed that he could perform the anthem of the Socialist International. With strong communist leanings, he went away, then to the Soviet Union, and there conducted the Philharmonic Orchestra of Moscow. It was in the Soviet Union, including that much of his work was recently published and preserved. Incredibly, despite an unparalleled international career, his music has clear roots in Brazilian folk traditions, especially black women. The hard today brings, Side A, compositions inspired by the mysticism of Umbanda and Candombl performed by the Symphonic Orchestra of Paris, on Side B, Jos Siqueira celebrates carnival of Recife, with compositions inspired by the rhythms and toys typical of the region at the time Mardi Gras, as frevo, maracatu and caboclinho, performed by the Symphonic Orchestra of the Soviet Union.
