Now that I heard it a few times, I must say that it’s a pretty awesome soundtrack. 🙂 The sound style reminds me a bit of Bear McCreary’s work ( and I’m pointing that out as a good thing, since I love his work ). Christopher Lennertz did a great job.

Thanks. Basically a mix of Gun and Warhawk. A bit too heavy on percussion and ethnic instruments for my taste but very enjoyable.

A very good score. I think I just became a fan of Lennertz – went down to Amazon to put my money down for the physical release.

Yet another example of "I lack the compositional faculty to adequately score this game so I will instead throw in a thousand different silly instruments, slamming drums, and electronic noises to short-cut my way to "other-worldly" music."

Oh well, you win some, you lose some – thanks for posting and giving me the chance to hear this one. 🙂

I have to agree with you. Aside from a fabulous main theme, the secondary theme sounds far too much like a slightly modified theme from a familiar western. The score doesn’t sound otherworldly like he wanted but just sounds like a metalized western score. The instrumentation doesn’t do anything to add to the quality of the music, and it tends to detract from it.

But I guess if you like your music to have plenty of metal guitars, western guitars, harmonicas, tribal percussion, and all that over your orchestra then sure check it out.

Of course If you are interested, this a video clip of Chris explaining how he composed the score. I watched it a few days back but I am pretty sure he addressed the ethnic and worldly fusion sound rationale in it. enjoys

I don’t get all of the hate for this score. I mean, it’s pretty much a Western….in SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE.

This soundtrack came with the limited edition of the game. It is actually pretty damn good! I didn’t think the Western/sci-fi thing would work.

Yeah, and that video was what actually got me interested in the score in the first place. It showcases the score’s one good theme and he gives a decent rationale about the reason for using the instrumentation he did. I just don’t think the majority of the score benefits from his choices. The rest of the score is pretty forgettable and doesn’t have much in the way of a unique sound or memorable themes.

The score for Warhawk was not an original sound-sounds like every other epic orchestral score-but at least it has interesting themes and instrumentation. I listened to Warhawk for the first time in preparation for this one and comparing the two there is no question that Warhawk is the more interesting score.

I can definitely agree with you on most if not all of those points! Not to mention that Warhawk has a better produced/mixed soundtrack for us to listen to. Most tracks are 3 to 4 minutes long and contain those qualities you speak of. Sadly, most of Starhawks tracks barely make it past 2 minutes and the whole experience only tops at 45 minutes. There is obviously more recorded music that was not put on the soundtrack. If someone were to put together a custom soundtrack combining some in-game rips etc and this soundtrack I can only speculate that we might receive a more quality product that a lot of people here seem to be desiring.
