I could upload a CD-Rip I found on the usenet (could be another rip than this). But you should know that track 11 is missing. I also have found a LP rip, but that one sounds pretty awful. Nevertheless, I could add track 11 from the LP rip, to complete the score.

If you can wait a week or so, I could rip the complete CD again (including, of course, track 11), since I have the original CD. (Have to look for it first, which may take a few days…).

Okay, then, a new rip will follow soon from me, and in flac. BTW, since phbart didn’t identify this bootleg exactly: my CD is from Tsunami records, a German bootleg company which released many score bootlegs, and was released in 1994 (Tsunami TCI 0601, 20 tracks with 49:23 min of music). This may very well be the rip phbart uploaded, though.

BTW, this bootleg sounds astonishlingy crisp and clear, for a bootleg, that is. Whoever was responsible for it, he did a good job! I was really happy when I was able to get a copy of it, 15 years ago, and for a reasonable price! On ebay, they are offered for about 35 US-$ these days…

Yes ! The source Tsunami used was the LP – and maybe the album master itself – that had been released in 1974 : that’s why it sounds so crisp and clear.

I don’t know which source they used, there are two LP versions. The first from 1974 which you mention (Sound Stage 2306) has two tracks (one on each side):

1. Marnie – A Symphonic Poem – Part 1 (25:08)
2. Marnie – A Symphonic Poem – Part 2 (26:05).

This LP has 51:13 min, as opposed to the 49:23 min of the Tsunami release, so this doesn’t seem to be the source.

The second LP release from 1975 (Crimson CR 101) has 24 tracks at 48:34 min., while the Tsunami CD has 49:23 min. with 20 tracks. This seems to be the source, at least the track names are identical. Tsunami chose to merge 8 of the 24 tracks into 4 tracks (The Morning After / Rutland Cottage and the three 2-part tracks "Obsessions 1 and 2", "The Nightmare 1 and 2", and "The Resolution 1 and 2"). That doesn’t explain the longer runtime, though. Maybe the LP was somehow speeded up, to get all the material on the two sides of the LP? That would mean Tsunami had access to the original masters and could re-arrange the tracks for the CD release. I will have to look after the LP rip I have on one of my drives, to verify this.

BTW, this weekend I plan to look after the Tsunami CD (which is still somewhere in my old room in my mom’s house, where I will be one of the next days!). Next monday or so I may be able to rip it and upload it for you. Stay tuned…

On the back of the LP the sentence continues: "… music would be unwatchable."

Funny, how Tsunami copied the text of the LP, INCLUDING the mistake ("undistguished" instead of the correct "undistinguished").

BTW, the LP had an additional chapter on its back ("The Story"). For those interested, I have added scans of the Crimson LP artwork (found it on the internet, it’s in rather low resolution!, sorry!)

Also added is a scan of a movie poster!

Okay, I have played both the main title from the LP rip (Crimson CR 101, 1:54 min.) and the Tsunami CD (2:04), and the LP track is indeed pitched up, compared to the Tsunami track! Now, what does it mean? The LP came first, so I think what happened was they decided to speed the tracks up by a factor of roughly 1.08 (that’s a speed-up of 8 %), to match the capacity of a LP. But now, we have a new mystery here: I did the math and reduced the 49:23 min. of the Tsunami CD by a factor of 8 %, and came to roughly 45:40 min, but NOT 49:23 from the LP. Now, that mystery was quickly solved: I looked at the LP tracks myself, and they added up to just 46:15 min, so the entry on soundtrackcollector.com is clearly a mistake (the LP Back cover, btw, doesn’t feature track names and length, so someone must have played the LP and made an error with the duration.) Now, that COULD mean the LP does have 30 or 40 seconds more material, so I compared the two releases track for track. That’s when I found another mystery: when comparing the 20 Tsunami tracks with the 24 Crimson tracks, there are the same track names (including some tracks on the LP being split up into part 1 and 2, as mentioned in one of my earlier posts, and one case of Tsunami merging two LP tracks names into one track), but several tracks (mostly the second half of the score) contain completely different music with different length compared to the Tsunami CD! I will have to study the scores further to determine if there is, indeed, some new material. In the end, this means, when Tsunami released the CD, they
1. sped down the music (this begs, btw, the question: was the LP speed correct in the first place? I have to check the DVD of the movie to answer that question. In that case, the Tsunami speed is, of course, too slow, but that wouldn’t make any sense, now, would it?)
2. arranged the tracks new, but didn’t change the track NAMES (maybe they didn’t care for the track names to make any sense; all they tried to do was probably arrange the tracks into the correct order, as heard in the movie – have to check that, too!)

If interested, I could upload the Crimson LP rip for further study.

Too bad there is no more info on that one – it’s odd that it has 33 tracks, because on soundtrackcollector.com there are listed just the two LP releases I mentioned in an earlier post (Crimson CR 101 and Sound Stage 2306), both of which don’t have 33 tracks! Furthermore, I finally played the first 2 minutes of the movie (Main Title) on youtube and compared it to the speed of the Crimson main title, and the Crimson LP seems indeed to have been sped up! The unknown LP rip from egosheep, on the other hand, matches the movie speed (as does, as a matter of fact, the TSUNAMI CD)! Very interesting!

I will have to study the scores further to determine if there is, indeed, some new material. In the end, this means, when Tsunami released the CD, they

I don’t have the actual Crimson LP myself, just the ripped files themselves, as found in the internet. I will upload it, but, aside from the speeding up, its quality is quite horrible, to be honest. But, it’s part of the soundtrack history of Marnie, so it still has its merit, at least for study purposes. I will upload it shortly!

The tempi of Herrmann’s music as heard in the movies generally tend to be very fast; the original tempo for Psycho as conducted by Herrmann is the fastest of all the interpretations so far – all re-recordings of Psycho (including Herrmann’s own, as a matter of fact!) are slower! A pristine, re-mastered presentation of the original tapes from Psycho would be wonderful, but other than a rather mediocre bootleg from the Laserdisc we don’t have anything – that’s a shame!

The same, regarding the tempo of the original movie score, seems to be the case with Marnie – Herrmann’s own re-recording (his Decca recording of the suite with the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1974) and the McNeely re-recording are slower too!

Yes, that idea also crossed my mind yesterday! But the Sound Stage 2-track LP has, according to soundtrackcollector.com, over 51 minutes, and your 33-track-rip adds up to only 48 minutes… now, again, it COULD have been sped up, couldn’t it? 😉

As long as nobody has a rip from the Sound Stage LP, all we can do is speculate!
