While "The Social Network" grew on me as a standalone listen, i can say that this album will definitely take MUCH more time to digest… I’m very "critical" so I’ll give it more listens over time, but as opposed to TSN, this one feels way less like there’s a beginning/middle/end storytelling movie music… By the time i got to the last track before "Is Your Love Strong Enough", well it just didn’t sound like a closing at all…

With "TSN", a good amount of tracks had those sort of what I called "atmospheric themes/melodies" which you can definitely come to appreciate & remember over time.
Well "TGWTDT" feels like an atmospheric Silent Hill VG score-type which is not necessarily everyone’s cup of tea.
Definitely a lot of work has been put into this project & obviously the music will fit the claustrophobic atmosphere of the film.
The technical aspects of the sounds created are once more very carefully/professionally mastered.

Seems like the only acoustic/symphonic instruments Trent & Atticus used are the piano, celesta & a bass(->though just one note & sampled in track 15)

1(nice job there!)-2(sets the mood for the rest, i guess)
-4-6-8-9[this one is the standout track!)-13(sums up the idea of this 3-hour movie music with these functional, ambient, very linear, yet quite subtle tracks)
-14(can’t wait to see where that track fits into the movie :o)
-16(i’ve been told this is the closest to "Nine Inch Nails" music)
-17(most f***** up dirty dissonant track)
-19(more distant-agreable noise for your ears than the other tracks)
-23(closest thing to a human feel in the album)
-26(now, regarding what i said earlier, this one track really feels like storytelling music from start to end)
-28(this & track 32 "oriculum" are the good "experimental" percussive parts of the album)
-33(quite an interesting beat & track as a whole)
-36(back to video game sound effects)

There is one little intimate "theme" played on an upright piano � la T.Newman on track 6, not sure if it’s reprised though.

As I meant before, i felt a little disappointed in the ending tracks after a 3-hour listen, but anyway…
While I’m much more fond of the big symphonic sound of John Williams, i’m not the right person to say if this material from Trent & Atticus will win (nominated for sure…)

Anyway, I’m sure and I hope this score will lead to more discussions about what a film score is/should be…

I got the free promo of Dragon Tattoo, and for me it was tremendously bad. Like TSN, absolutely no sense of drama. I love electronic scores, from Tangerine Dream to Zimmer, but Renzor just is clueless when it comes to film scoring. I deleted the promo files and cannot fathom 3 CDs worth of this. However… Fincher is more to blame since he would tell Ross & Renzor what he wants, and approve or toss music he doesn’t want. But this score should be tossed. Awful, awful 🙁

I too deleted the 30 minutes promo files. It’s so plain and nothing’s going on. Based on the story, I thought it would finally be some NIN-ish heavy shit!
Fincher and Nolan as directors always want something atmospheric.. None of their films’ scores I’m fond of. (except Alien3)
As electronic scores, I much prefer TCB’s Hanna.

then again I dont remember much of it
but it had to work with the movie or else I’d have noticed something was off/bad

How about when Three 6 Mafia won the Oscar for "Hard Out Here For A Pimp" from Hustle & Flow? That was a joke. I was floored. TSN was a joke too. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is just not the same anymore, and neither are movies. I constantly find myself watching older classic movies and wondering why the f they’re not made that way anymore. It’s like when you see a 50’s era Chevrolet Bel Air drive down the street and think to yourself, "they don’t make em like they used to"…..

At least I wouldn’t be wasting $50 on a copy that might or might not be altered/messed with in some way.

I thought this soundtrack was better than Social Network’s. Hell, they had A LOT more time to craft it. Social Network score had a Ghosts song on it! How can you just copy and paste a song from a previous album and get an oscar?! Don’t get me wrong, I loved it, and bought it, and I still listen to it, but if THAT can win an oscar, then THIS should win an oscar!

Eh, they shouldn’t have won for The Social Network, but it was still a rather well-crafted film…I’d just rather have music that doesn’t conform to the film entirely, if that makes sense. I couldn’t get a rise out of this soundtrack, although I did enjoy the film overall more than the original adaptation.

Many thanks for this one. I thought The Social Network as a standalone score was pretty good, but it’s not the amazing score that the Academy deemed it to be. But I have to admit, the score works unbelievably well in the context of the film, especially "Hand Covers Bruise," which accompanied one of the most solitary and cold/distant intro openings of any film in recent memory, was simply genius. And its reprise later when Eduardo is betrayed is appropriately tragic.

I have a strange suspicion that TCB’s Hanna is going to be Reznor/Ross’ TSN this year, a good score (but not amazing) that will take the cake hoping to bring mainstream appeal into film scores. Sad thing is, I don’t even think Hanna’s anywhere as good or coherent as TSN.

Well said!! Actually, the only pre-composed tracks are "Ghosts 14" and "Ghosts 35", which are "A Familiar Taste" and "On We March", respectively. Even then, they’re improved from the original Ghost tracks. I like the Social Network versions better. I’m surprised that went unnoticed by the Academy, LOL!
