Am I the only person who’s played Final Fantasy VII and never seen these scenes?! If you lose the submarine mini game on Disc 2, you end up seeing completely different scenes and get a red submarine.

FFVII – Losing the submarine game, getting the red submarine – YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCBPh15Jn7c)

Yeah, originally when I first played FFVII I never knew about the Red Sub either – I remember my brother and I always wondered where exactly that door blocked by the guard dog led, and how to get past said dog. It was only a while later I read that it was part of an alternate path through the game to gain the Red Sub instead of the grey one. Alas my ultimate FFVII save was long since passed that point so I never actually had the red sub as part of it.

However, one time I did load up a save file saved in the underwater reactor sub dock (just before the submarine minigame) to see if this was indeed true, and it was. But the Red Sub has no benefit over the Grey one other than a change of colour. Plus, after that scene the dog returns so you can’t revisit the Red Sub’s dock in Junon either. Still an interesting diversion nonetheless.

Ha, I know I knew about this because I failed the submarine game on my first runthrough

and I didn’t know that either.

I don’t know what other effects failing the subgame has anyway.
I did fail it but I immediately reset and won on the next go around.

Interesting news.

I do have to go back there at some point to continue the game…..I won’t put the spoiler here, but I suppose that dog will be back blocking the door. We’ll see.

Failing the sub-minigame only means you lose the Huge Materia that the Red Sub was carrying. I can’t remember if it’s the one that later gives you the Bahamut ZERO summon materia or one of the Master materias, but either way, you lose a valuable key item in exchange for a sub that has no difference to the regular one other than a change of colour.

But it’s still interesting either way.
