If anyone is interested, I’ve just reviewed the "Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection", which is on the XBox 360 and the PS3 and has over 40 amazing Mega Drive games on it including Sonic, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe and much more. You can read my review here!
Johnny Mercyside: Game Review: Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2011/11/game-review-sega-mega-drive-ultimate.html)
I love the Mega Drive, and still had one til recently. Luckily though, the magic of emulation means I still can play all the classics I grew up with on my PC. As for favourite game, I’d have to say Sonic 2 – it was the blue spiky one’s magnum opus at that time (a feat not topped til the sublime Sonic CD for the much maligned Mega CD was released). I still remember taking a a couple of days off school feigning sickness just to play it! :p
Naturally, I loved many other games too of course – Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles, Phantasy Star II, Golden Axe, Landstalker, Flashback, Syndicate, Shining Force I and II, Streets of Rage 1, 2 and 3 – but Sonic 2 is still my favourite. 🙂
I can’t really pick a firm favorite, as the console had plenty of great games: Asterix, Alisia Dragoon, Chakan (bloody hard game), Kid Chameleon, Phantasy Star II (Heh, I bought Enkidoh’s copy a few years ago lol), Desert/Jungle/Urban Strike, Talespin, Sonic 1+2+3+& Knuckles, Ranger X, X-Men etc. I admit though, I do have a fondness for the ‘Strike’ series, but Asterix and Alisia Dragoon are two I did spend a lot of time tracking down and paying a small fortune for on Ebay… BUT THEY WERE WORTH IT!!
But yeah, this wasn’t really my thing. The Megadrive was okay, but it wasn’t italian enough and there were no pipes…
I much preferred the SNES to the Genesis, man. Like, by a lot.
I do recall that Nintendo and Sony did work together to make a CD platform for the SNES… but Nintendo pulled out of it when the new machine was about 50% complete iirc.
it had some good games though.
even though i currently have what is considered the cream of the crop for genesis, i still dont play it that much.
Good times.
The only one thing I didn’t really get to enjoy at that time was the glory of locking on Sonic and Knuckles to Sonic 3. See, my aunt buys me the games, and she was conned into buying the bootlegged carts because they were cheaper. As a result, I can’t save game in Sonic 3, and my SnK cart lacks a lock-on slot. I’ve only managed to enjoy the true glory of the games by buying the PC version, and then the Virtual Console version of the game.
