VBR = Variable bitrate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variable_bitrate)
CBR = Constant bitrate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constant_bitrate)

It depends on a person what they prefer.

That’s true. Variable is the choice of most album rips these days and my personal preference. You tend to get the best quality while retaining a somewhat smaller file size. It’s nearly impossible to hear a difference by ear but I always appreciate VBR rips over constant. Besides, CBR mp3’s feels so…Napster-ish. haha
