Here’s the rules:
1. To vote, simply check who is going against who and reply with your favourite summon in each roundup, preferably in a column format.
2. When a round finishes, if there are any tiebreakers, I’ll post them up at the end. Tiebreakers are to be decided by listing them, and asking the question again about who is their favourite, the first response wins the tiebreak (eg. if the tiebreaker was Odin vs Bahamut, and the first poster to respond chooses Odin, Odin goes through to the next round).
3. Choosing these 41 summons was a difficult challenge. There were around 80 summons in the games listed, which wasn’t a good number. Around 30 of these summons were in multiple games, the other odd number I used as I wanted certain summons that only appeared in a single game, but had a decent impact in the game (ie, Valefor).
3. Round 1 has 16 fights to it. Because 41 doesn’t work into 16, there are 9 battles where there are three summons who will fight for the place in Round 2.
4. Unlike the FF Characters game, Round 1 isn’t random. There were an elite 7 summons that appear in the most FF titles, and I wanted these to be capped to only go against one opponent rather than two. However, Round 2 onwards will be randomised.
5. I’ll keep these rounds open for around 6 days it depends on the reception, this forum can go slow at times.
6. Please note that some of these summons appear more than they’re listed, just not as summons. For instance, Mog is a main character in FF6, and chocobos appear in many games. Please think of their summon compartments only, not all the games and their appearances combined. It’s the summon element we’re talking about.
7. Don’t take this seriously, it’s just a bit of fun. By all means debate why you love or hate certain summons, and it can be because they’re powerful, memorable or cute, just be respectful of other’s feelings of those same summons.
I’ll place a little profile with these summons as well, to get you familiar with them. I won’t do it for Round 2 onwards though, you should be acquainted with them by that point I think. Let’s go!

If you’re struggling to see the competitions, here’s the 16 battles in text:
Bahamut vs Belias
Ifrit vs Hecatoncheir
Odin vs Valefor
Shiva vs Garuda
Ramuh vs Siren
Titan vs Raiden
Leviathan vs Brynhildr
Carbuncle vs Lich vs Anima
Phoenix vs Ultima vs Cyclops
Alexander vs Ark vs Atomos
Chocobo vs Valigarmanda vs Eden
Diabolos vs Remora vs Mist Dragon
Fenrir vs Asura vs Syldra
Golem vs Zodiark vs Hades
Mog vs Catoblepas vs Knights of the Round
Sylph vs Madeen vs Tonberry
*THIS GAME IS FINISHED – DIABOLOS IS THE WINNER*
Ifrit
Odin
Shiva
Siren
Titan
Leviathan
Anima – Great design.
Phoenix
Alexander – for the beautiful FFIX FMV, but Atomos FMV is pretty nice too:)
Valigarmanda – Eden has cool design, but his animation length is frustrating, while Valigarmanda brings -aga spells.
Diabolos – In FFVIII his design is perfect, while in FFXI not so much.
Syldra – was pretty strong and useful, plus story relevance.
Zodiark – Probably the toughest fight… Was fun to summon in IZJS.
Knights of the Round – A bit cheap, but…
Tonberry
Edit: Are those all summons for round 1? Where is Doomtrain and Cactuar?O_O
Ifrit
Valefor
Shiva
Ramuh
Raiden
Leviathan
Anima
Phoenix
Alexander
Valigarmanda (although it’ll always be Tritoch to me)
Diabolos
Asura
Golem
Knights of the Round
Madeen
I played Advance and I don’t remember that…….
The fug.
I put in Eden and Tonberry instead, Doomtrain and Cactuar, the four combined, only appear in FF8. I went for two out of the four. It was a hard choice. 🙁
They changed the name to Valigarmanda o_O
I played Advance and I don’t remember that…….
The fug.
Yeah I wasn’t sure what to put him down as, he was Tritoch in my game as well. Shall I change him as both you and arthurgolden disagree with the name choice? 🙂
My picks…
Bahamut
Ifrit
Odin
Shiva
Ramuh
Raiden
Brynhildr
Anima
Phoenix
Alexander
Valigarmanda
Diabolos
Fenrir
Hades
Knights of the Round
Madeen
Ifrit – Anything from XIII auto-loses, worst summons ever.
Valefor – Odin is cool but completely useless.
Shiva – I’d tap.
Ramuh – First summon in IX will get my vote
Raiden
Leviathan
Anima – Possibly the coolest summon in any game.
Ultima – XII summons >>>>
Ark – Ark will go far.
Chocobo – Chocobos are cute.
Diabolos – Cool looking, if a little useless.
Fenrir
Zodiark – XII summons were awesome, Zodiark is a beast.
Mog
Tonberry
Ifrit
Odin (FYI, Odin is now a Summonable Monster (Avatar) in Final Fantasy XI)
Garuda
Ramuh
Raiden
Leviathan
Carbuncle
Phoenix
Alexander (Like Odin, Alexander is now a Summonable Monster (Avatar) in Final Fantasy XI)
Eden
Diabolos
Fenrir
Hades
Knights of the Round
Tonberry
Ifrit – Sorry Negster, but I much prefer the ‘hot dog’ to Vanielle’s silly hundred-handed giant. :p
Odin – No contest. The Allfather wins hands down against Yuna’s weird bird. And usually, even when Odin’s instant death attack misses, there is often some other means of having him deal alternative damage to compensate (Gungnir in VII, wind elemental damage in IX).
Shiva – Shiva is my all time favourite FF summon, although Garuda’s usefulness in XI cannot be discounted (Predator Claws ftw).
Ramuh – a tough one. Siren was definetely useful in VIII – shutting down any pesky magic users very effectively, but Ramuh wins by shear power alone. Plus he’s cool looking in XI. 😉
Titan – rather easy. Titan is very useful in XI, where as Raiden in VI is just ‘Odin Mk II’.
Leviathan – again, as cool as Brynhildr is (a firey female knight who transforms into a racing car!), Leviathan is just far more useful, especially in the games where his Tsunami attack can instantly remove enemies from the battle!
Carbuncle – Carby wins, if only for being a Summoner’s indispensable partner in XI (of all XI’s avatars, she uses the least MP to summon and stay out, and has a wide variety of holy elemental abilities and attacks to either heal or destroy). Lich in FFT was just a floating corpse, and Anima was just too silly looking, despite it’s power in X.
Ultima – again, no contest. She’s a fallen angel who led a failed rebellion against the gods (yet still retains her holy powers). Enough said. Not to mention she’s extremely hard to fight in XII as well.
Ark – it’s an airship that transforms into a mech. Still the coolest summon of all (Neg would probably agree with me on this one.), plus arguably IX’s most powerful Eidolon. It’s full summoning also allows you to cheat with healing – cast Regen on your party and then have Garnet summon Ark – you’re guaranteed to be fully healed by the time the summon animation has finished. 😉
Eden – it was ridiculously powerful, if weird-as-all-get-out, compared to a chocobo kicking or Biggs and Wedge’s nemesis (and yes, I still called it ‘Tritoch’ too – I played the SNES version of VI first, leave me alone!). :p Plus, she has an evil cameo in XIII too. 😉
Diabolos – ‘Big D’, no contest. Little fish that leech MP, or Rydia’s pet, can’t compare to the dark messenger. Especially given his ambiguous ‘end-justifies-the-means’ goals in XI (is he the saviour of Vana’diel’s people or does just he want them to spend eternity lost in his dreamworld to avoid death and suffering?), he’s just too cool.
Asura – a tough choice. Fenrir is very powerful in his various incarnations (especially XI, where he was the Federation of Windurst’s eleventh-hour saviour in the Crystal War, virtually wiping out the Yagudo forces wholesale), but Faris’s water dragon is little more than a power source for her pirate ship. IV’s queen of the summons wins though by having three alternate beneficial attacks randomly selected (two in the original US SNES version), which can be a great benefit during a tough battle.
Hades – I never got Zodiark in XII or Tactics, and Golem just cast Wall on your party (which you can simply cast anyway). Hades afflicts the enemy with every negative status effect under the sun, so no matter what you’re fighting, there is bound to be some status that will hurt the enemy.
Knights of the Round – What needs to be said about this one? It’s King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Only a few enemies in the game can face a summoning of them and live to tell about it!
Sylph – Madeen was just a mutant moogle gone berserk, and a lot of enemies are immune to Tonberry’s kitchen utensil attack, so Slyph wins by default.
Incidentally, I noticed in that list Johnny you listed some of the summons as appearing in certain games where they weren’t actually summonable (such as Atomos, Bahamut and Phoenix in XI), yet you didn’t mention non-summonable appearances for other FF games. For those interested, these are the ‘non-summons’ appearences for them which weren’t mentioned:
Bahamut: XIV (plus his airship name in XII)
Belias: Tactics (as ‘Velius’)
Ifrit: XIII, XIV (as well as his airship name in XII). You also forgot to mention he’s summonable in X. 😉
Ramuh: XIII
Siren: XIII
Titan: XIII, XIV
Leviathan: XIV (as well as his airship name in XII)
Carbuncle: XIII
Lich: I, IX
Anima: XIII
Phoenix: XIII
Ultima: Tactics (as ‘Altima’)

Atomos: V, XIII
Chocobo: VIII (as a summon using a Chocobo Feather)
Eden: XIII
Diabolos: XIV
Golem: various games as an enemy
Hades: IX
Catoblepas: VIII
Knights of the Round: XI (as a name for a sword weapon skill, fittingly, on the Relic sword Excalibur)
Sorry Johnny to go off on a tangent like that, but I just wanted to add that info for those who were unaware. 🙂
Bahamut: XIV (plus his airship name in XII)

Bonus question, who is your favourite summon, if not one of the two finalists? Thanks for taking part! 🙂
Diabolos vs Bahamut…
My vote is for Diabolos. His summoning animation is very atmospheric, and his appearance is just purely demonic.
Fav Summon: Diabolos of course… he’s deadly in FFXI, with multiple attacks/abilities. Add in he created Dynamis (The Dream World) and is on the side of Good, are pluses in my book.
Fav Summon: Tough one… I love the Espers from XII, they all look great and the animations are superb…
On terms of functionallity, KOTR hands down.
Diabolos is powerful, definitely, but in VIII there were just too many enemies immune to his gravity-based attack (he was essentially like Atomos in IX). Bahamut always dealt consistent damage across all his appearances. Besides, in XI he’s utterly evil and wants to destroy Vana’diel in a ‘cruel-to-be-kind’ sort of way (to stop Promathia being reborn and enveloping all life he’ll just destroy Vana’diel itself, and therefore, there would be no life left for him to envelop). The King of the Dragons is definitely the winner here. 🙂
Bonus question: Shiva is still my favourite summon, for reasons I already mentioned earlier. 😉
I never played FFXI, so I can’t really comment on Diabolos in that game. I will say that in FFVIII, he can be awesome, but he doesn’t do nearly enough damage at low levels to be useful. And by the time you level him up to anything decent (level 40-ish), most enemies are immune to him. Lastly, by the time he really starts doing the highest damage he can do, your characters are strong enough and fast enough to quickly kill most enemies that are not immune to him. In my opinion, it was a real shame they capped his damage limit at 9999, but what can you do? What I really appreciated about him was the Enc-None and Mug abilities, and of course, the summoning sequence. As for the summoning itself, it’s awesome, and I never fail to be amused at how his giant ball of black slime always crushes your enemies. 🙂
But I prefer Bahamut, mostly for his appearance in VII, VIII, and X. He always looked badass across the series (even the Sky Fortress Bahamut in XII was pretty badass looking), and as Enkidoh said, consistently did high damage. It helps that he’s non-elemental too. In X, I thought he pretty much nullified Valefor, Ifrit, Ixion, and Shiva, and in VII and VIII I still summon him when I want to brought out the big guns. I also liked his philosophical aspect in VIII, in that he challenges those who recognize of the futility of war coupled with the inherent nature of violence ingrained in mankind. He wasn’t just a mindless monster like most other GFs. Anyway, I liked him a lot in the aforementioned games and I’m really glad he made it this far, both in the FF franchise and in this contest!
He is my favourite Summon across all Final Fantasies, the Dragon King’s appearence especially in FF IX was spectacular, showed all his power. Beaten by none, only by Alexander.
I’d say voting ends tomorrow, if you want to vote, do it now. 🙂
Reminds me to get my actual Diabolos figure out and put him on display… perhaps ‘hovering’ over my defeated Bahamut! lol
Do another competition, but howabout focusing on the many modes of Transport? Not just ones like the Highwind, Garden etc… Trains, cars, hovercraft and the like.
And regarding transports/locations I don’t really prefer any of the two, I guess transports would be nice in the sense that it’d be completely different.
