I’ve been a sometimes-lurker and rarely poster on this forum for a while now, but I really wanted to share a little pet project of mine I have been working on for the past few months: creating a custom extended soundtrack of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves!
I have loved Greg Edmonson’s work ever since Drake’s Fortune and I was extremely surprised to find that a lot of in-game music hadn’t been included on the soundtrack at the time of release. I found this such a shame that I decided to make a tribute to Edmonson’s work by including and extending as much music from the original game files as I possibly could. I downloaded a game rip and managed to extract the psarc files, converted them into mp3 and began a long process of sorting them out and comparing them to the original soundtrack. Now, after a final week of back breaking audio editing in Audition I can finally declare this project done and ready for download! I hope you all enjoy! Please let me know if you happen to stumble upon any flaws regarding volume or transitions. I did my best to fix them as much as I could, but it’s not impossible that I missed a few things.

CHANGE LOG – JULY 4, 2011:
* Fixed a volume hiccup at the end of track 9 (Urban Warfare) that was only audible with earphones but driving me insane.
* Added a new track! Track 30 – Broken Paradise, Part II (renumbered track list after track 29.)
* Equalized the volumes of all tracks with MP3gain, as there were huge differences between them. Tracks should now all be around 91 dB.
* Ran all the files through TagScanner and fixed the tags where necessary.
p.s. In case anyone is wondering if this is in any way connected to FunnyML’s thread; it isn’t. I just found that thread myself and had absolutely idea he was also working on this. Guess we just did the same thing at the same time. Just saying so in advance; don’t want to step on any toes, after all.
i always knew there had to be an extended version of this awesome soundtrack
very aweome work there trennas

Well, it’s not like there "just was one." There were a gazillion music files, and most of them had to be edited severely in order be even remotely able to listen to. Lots of loops, impossible places to cut or make transitions. But yeah, after all that, there finally was one XD
Plans, yes. But I have no idea how soon it will happen. Uncharted 2 took a lot of time to assemble, and judging by the pre-work I’ve already done for Drake’s Fortune that one is going to take even longer. So yeah, might or might happen, but certainly not in the near future..
You did a great job on this and all of the tracks flow smoothly.

Thanks, Sirusjr! Glad you enjoyed it! 🙂 Normally I don’t have the patience for it either, but I just had to make an exception for this one. And well, when you get all the files sorted out you’ll quickly find that a lot of it is the same or are variations of the same themes. Then it’s just a matter of finding the best ones, which actually does take quite long :p
been looking for the Sticks and Stones. it’s the BGM when Drake’s fighting the Guardians. well done! Thank you as well! That one and Mystic Warriors are really cool tracks, but I almost didn’t include them because they sounded so different from the rest of the soundtrack. Luckily, I found variations that actually incorporated a bit of the other stuff so they didn’t stand out too much 🙂
Glad you’re enjoying it until then! I can’t wait to get my hands on the music of Drake’s Deception; but that will still be a while!
I’m really just itching to give Drake’s Fortune music the same treatment, but I’m afraid it will have to wait for a while due to current time restrictions. Shame, because these are fun projects to work on. Maybe I’ll make some headway in a month or so..

don’t worry, great you had the time to finish your project. My project is about a gamerip plus the exclusive OST tracks. So many projects, so little time.

Thanks! Yeah, there is still some stuff missing, but most of them were variations on tracks that were included in this soundtrack version. I just picked the best and discarded the rest 🙂 Can’t wait for you to finish yours though! I’m curious!
Thank you!
Thank you!
Thanks! My pleasure!
I’m sorry to say this, but I have neither the game nor the music files of that game. I’ll look up the music though, see if it’s any good.
And thanks for the nice words, guys 🙂

The full change log is in the original post!
On a side note: I’m currently re-indexing the music files from Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, with a similar custom extended OST in mind! Can’t promise it will be done anytime soon, but stay tuned and I’ll post updates from time to time! 🙂
The reason for that is because I was doing part 2 of a personal Uncharted recording soundtrack for me and me alone (don’t have easy means of uploads, or easy internet), by literally recording the music in-game. However there were so many variations when climbing Shangra-La Hotel that I gave up on trying to get every single variation of them (the Hotel sequence easily has over twenty different versions. Who dies that often on anything but Crushing?), which is why the music stopped there. Part 1 was actually doing Drake’s Fortune, which was way easier comparatively speaking because there was much less music content in it, so it should be easier for you to mix (counting the unique OST stuff and track variations, the total track list for that came in at about 90). This was also literally JUST before the PS3 discs were cracked open and people could rip the music.
Just as a question, does the Uncharted 2 Custom Soundtrack you made have any of the small cues of music that play in specific locations? You know the kind that aren’t full tracks, but are rather 10 to 30 second long pieces of ambient music? A really good example of this would be in A Rock and a Hard Place and The City’s Secret.
Lastly, here’s a fun fact: Greg Edmonson did the music for Firefly. Yes, THAT Firefly.
No offense but I really would recommend you do some more research here. I think you’ll find very quickly why a lot of us always favor FLAC whenever we have the choice. 🙂

Indeed. 🙂

Lazy gamerip?
Mind you i have ripped uncharted 2 and i must say the amount of work editing/mixing the layers is not easy, so there were particulalry no lazying around on that one. These scores are easy to convert but the amount of tracks/layers are time consuming.

First of all: a big thank you! Hope you enjoy it to the fullest! Secondly: yeah, that has always been my problem with FLAC format as well. if I had unlimited storage space and bandwith, I’d use that, but since I’m not entitled to any of those luxuries, the highest quality mp3 will have to do. Besides, it’s indeed a much more accessible format and it doesn’t flood your entire phone or music player if you want to have it mobile (like I do.) Despite my excellent hearing, I really can’t tell the difference either.
In some cases, gamerips can lack a bit of finesse and can be not so listen friendly, but they are absolutely great source for raw material. You can interpret that as lazy, but the fact is it’s just a different work method with a different goal in mind. Without the gamerips, this forum would be a lot emptier, so I think they deserve a big pat on the back 🙂
I’ve considered a similar recording approach, but discarded it quickly when I figured I would have to run through as many hours of music as there were gameplay and possibly even more. Ripping and converting the music files from the game was a much faster and purer method, and I could skip straight to sorting and editing that way. That also gave me access to all the variations, from which I just picked the best ones and pieced them together until they sounded right. To answer your question, yes, I also used a LOT of the small cues and moods, mostly for track introductions and transitions. And if I remember correctly, I mainly used cues to build my version of A Rock And A Hard Place. But other than that one, no complete tracks made out of cues.
I’m currently making some good progress on the Drake’s Fortune soundtrack! Think I’ve got about eight or nine tracks done so far. Not working in any particular order, just with what I’m in the mood for at the time. Also, I have no idea what the track total will be, as many tracks from the original OST are mashed together from different music files. For example, I split Trapped (which has a very clear cut in the middle) from the OST into two seperate extended tracks. Also, I build one track entirely out of cues, but I’m not sure yet if I’m going to include that one, as there is another file (I found out later) which uses a lot of those cues. Don’t want it to get repetitive after all, but we’ll see how that plays out.
And yep, the Firefly soundtrack is also great! 😀

I indeed doubt at it was lazy. The amount of files alone is enormous; you really need a good system for sorting and cataloging everything before you can even get started on editing the music. And then there are so many variations that it takes a vast amount of time sifting out the best stuff. Luckily, Drake’s Fortune has a significantly less amount of files 🙂

By the way, if any of you want to hear a preview of the Drake’s Fortune OST or want to keep up to date with the progress, check out my blog Play/Write (http://playslashwrite.tumblr.com/)! I already uploaded The Jeep Chase (http://playslashwrite.tumblr.com/post/7770086698/the-jeep-chase-is-the-first-preview-or-rather) as a teaser track! More stuff coming soon!
EDIT: But, the website says that the download isn’t up temporarily, is that you, or the site?

Thanks! (I used to be Trennas, am here under a new account) I just checked megaupload and the download still seems to work, so I’m guessing it was just a temp glitch on their end! Download while you can! 🙂
You’re welcome!
This cue cannot be isolated in full as it’s from a prerendered movie, but it’s possible they stored the speech and sfx/music layer separately (so, a dialogue-free version might be possible).
I miss a lot of great cues from that game and I would instantly buy all copies from LaLaLand’s U3 off the market to push an extended U2 re-release 😉
