Very interesting fact: The Pink Panther was done in 1963, then "A Shot in the Dark" was done in 1965. THEN, in 1968, they came out with "Inspector Clouseau", a film with Alan Arkin in the title role, NOT Peter Sellers! (Needless to say, the film bombed!)

No. A Shot in the Dark actually opened in 1964, only three months after the first Pink Panther movie. Strangely enough, The Pink Panther opened as early as 1963 in only three countries; Sweden, Finland and West Germany. In the U.S it didn’t open until March 1964. Shooting of A Shot in the Dark began before the first movie even opened in USA. They started shooting in the same month as the first previews for The Pink Panther were being held in Hollywood. So, when the shooting started, they didn’t even know if the first one would be a hit.

Yes, Inspector Clouseau was a flop. A pity, though, since Alan Arkin did a great job (as always). In fact, he is better than anyone else who took over the part in later films. But Peter Sellers he ain’t. And that goes for all the other "imposters" as well.

Well, I was just quoting IMDB.com where it said "1965" for "A shot in the dark".

According to IMDb the US premiere was 23 June 1964. Apart from the United States and Brazil, the rest of the world had to wait until 1965 before they could see the A Shot in the Dark. This was probably because the (European) theatres were occupied with the first Panther feature. So, instead of pulling The Pink Panther from the theatres, and losing money, they put A Shot in the Dark on hold.

The US premiere for The Pink Panther was on 18 March 1964. The World Premiere was i London, England on 7 January 1964. But it actually opened in West Germany as early as 19 December 1963, in Finland one day later and in Sweden 26 December 1963.

Given the closeness of production of the first two films, do you know why they changed from Technirama to Panavision?

The origins of A Shot in the Dark was a stage play, written by Harry Kurnitz and based on the French original L’Idiote by Marcel Achard. No Ispector Clouseau existed in the play. Blake Edwards was not the original director. It was supposed to be Peter Seller’s next job after The Pink Panther. But Sellers wanted out. He thought the script was bad. So he went to Blake Edwards to ask him for help. Edwards read the script and turned it down. By then, the shooting was soon to start. Most of the sets had already been built. Luckily enough, Edwards met William Peter Blatty, a young scriptwriter, on a cruise. They started talking and soon began reworking the script. Totally reworking it. From the beginning Inspector Clouseau was one of the characters. Dreyfus was born, and so on. When finished, the script was anything but an adaptation of Harry Kurnitz’ play. Blake Edwards was on and Sellers satisfied. At least to start with. So. A Shot in the Dark was not really meant to be part of the Panther franchise. But all of the original planning came in as part of the whole deal. That includes everything technical, Panavision and De Luxe Color, for example.

Also, Technirama was expensive. Shot on horizontal 8-perf, it took a lot of film stock to shoot a movie. It also required much lab-work, which also drove up the costs. Using a Vistavision negative film stock, reducing that into 35mm Anamorphic prints, was also a costly process. At times, dye-transfer intermediates were struck to preserve the original quality, since Eastman-Kodak stock faded. Again something that cost a great deal of money.

You have failed to mention how impossible Sellers was to work with! If you get a chance to see the movie based on Seller’s life, with Geoffrey Rush, playing Peter Sellers, it is a GREAT movie, and Rush did a fantastic job, recreating parts from the movie "Casino Royale", and it really shows what a psycho Sellers was!

I’m an old fart, so I’ve had many chances, for many years, to pick up information. I also have a lot of books and old movie magazines, as far back as the early 60’s. And I’ve appreciated Blake Edwards since i was a kid. I’m also very fond of Sellers, in spite of him being a nutcase. Not exactly a fan of them, but close enough. And, yes, I saw the movie about Sellers. But I must admit it did not include anyting I didn’t aldready know.

During the filming of A Shot in the Dark, Edwards and Sellers became enemies. Both swore never to work together again. Well, we know what happened. None of them could resist the money involved i The Party. The same happened when the company asked for more Clouseau. Edwards admitted, without any hypocrisy or hesitation, that money and great shooting locations were the only reasons any for them to accept doing the sequels. He also claimed that working with Sellers was either heaven or pure hell.

Sellers also had a tendency to get impatient. Him leaving Casino Royale was not the only time he bailed out. He also tried to leave A Shot in the Dark and managed to get out of Dr. Strangelove before it was finished.

I can’t remember if it was in that movie. But I know that somewhere during shooting, Sellers blew a fuse and simpli disappeared. They finished the movie without him and edited it so his abcence wouldn’t be too obvious. Considering the overall look of that film, I don’t think anyone not involved in the making of it, can notice anything wrong.

On the shooting of A Shot in the Dark, Sellers threatened to leave but didn’t. But he went away over a weekend. When he came back, he told Edwards about a french concierge he met when being away. He had become fascinated by the man’s accent, and wanted to use it on Clouseau. And if you listen closely, you can notice that Sellers accent changes towards the end of the movie. Suddenly the normal word "bomb" becomes "beumb", and so on. The classic Couseau accent was born. Not too great when it comes to continuity. But I imagine Edwards had two choises. Accept Sellers’ sudden idea, or have him walking off.

Another interesting thing about the Panther films, is the fact that David Niven was the star of the first one. During production anyway. Niven had hoped for a series of films in the "The Thin Man" vein. But Sellers managed to steal the show. And the rest, as we say, is history.

Well, apparently, it’s on one of those "3 movie soundtrack on one CD" type of situation. The first score is "Condorman", and then Shot in the Dark!

I really hate when they do that!! Where am I supposed to put this CD on my shelve? Under "C" for Condorman, right? I always rip new CDs, and covers, so that I can put only the one film score that I want on that CD, and put it with the rest of the scores, in the proper order!

Oooooohhh – what I wouldn’t give for a proper release of Condorman…..OK movie (but dated very badly) with an absolutely sizzling score.

Originally Clouseau was meant to be played by Peter Ustinov, but scheduling problems arose around Topkapi (I think it was Topkapi) and Sellers got the role and Niven, for whom the film was meant to be a grand comeback said, and I’m paraphrasing, ‘Ah well, there goes my comeback’ as Sellers stole the show.

A Shot in the Dark did not originally feature Clouseau, hence it is the only one in the Sellers series that had no reference to The Pink Panther in the title, it was based on a play I believe and Clouseau was shoehorned in. Thus was born a franchise.

At the time of his death Sellers was working on a Blake Edwards-less film called Romance of the Pink Panther where Clouseau falls in love with a cat burglar known as The Frog. Sidney Poitier was supposedly down to direct and after Sellers death the Clouseau role was offered to Dudley Moore – who turned it down due to his respect for Sellers.[COLOR="Silver"]

The main thing that I found REALLY annoying about "The Pink Panther", and Peter Sellers, was the way that his wife would say "Darling, could you turn out the light"?, and then Sellers would use the word "Darling" in every other sentence, when talking to her. Later, she says "my love" and he used that constantly when speaking to her. And I am pretty sure that was Sellers, NOT the script! If you met a person like that, you would not want him as your friend!

Several scenes, including the one you quoted, were "brainstormed" by Edwards and Sellers. There were no dialogue or specific situations descripted in the script. So you can equally "blame" Edwards and Sellers in those cases. This way of working made the Clouseau part grow. Something that wasn’t planned, since the character originally was written for Peter Ustinov.

Also, Sellers was not yet a good physical actor when The Pink Panther was made. As Edwards explained in an interview, he had to teach Sellers the physical side of Clouseau. In fact, Edwards claimed that Clouseau was him. Stuff like Clouseu flying through a room after pushing a door open, is actually gags that really happened to Edwards.

You know, I have NEVER heard anything bad about Steve Martin, Robin Williams, Tom Hanks, or Whoopee! There are alot of funny people who are great to work with. Everyone says that Jay Leno is one of the greatest guys in Hollywood!

I should have written that better, the best comedians have always have some problem with drink or drugs. Sellers was one of a rare few that could just make an audience laugh without saying anything, he had that face. Of the list you given there’s none there that had the talent even close to Sellers, I suppose you know of his comedic genius with The Goons Show which influenced every comedic talent there is today. A bit like as people say every rock band owes a debt to the beatles well the goon show was that to comedy. I can easily see why Americans enjoyed typical British humour above their own sometimes as american comedy (this includes your listed comedic talents) miss one vital component to an essential package, irony! These guys from Sellers era had it in bucketloads but the idea of irony seems to have been lost in america over the past 40 years

Jim Carrey has played that as well, but he’s done some good parts. If you ever see "Majestic", that is a role he should have gotten at least an oscar nomination for, but he was passed up because everyone said that he was "Trying for an oscar too hard"!!! (what a CROCK!) How you try too hard to act in a role? If you look at the film, he was not acting over the top, or too much. He was just playing the role seriously, and critics just couldn’t stand that!

Couldn’t agree with you more.Not only is Carrey terrific, but Martin Landau is also fantastic in his tender portrait of the old man, convinced that his son has returned. A wondeful movie. I get a "Frank Capra-feeling" when i watch it.

But can you tell me waht�s funny with Adam Sandler? In every movie he’s a mean pain in the ass. Every "joke" is Sandler being rude to someone and anyone. How anyone can think that’s funny is beyond me. I know only one who can be mean and get away with it; Don Rickles. And Sadler ain’t no Rickles.Doesn’t even come close.

I couldn’t disagree with you more, I think "The Party" is hilarious, different strokes for different folks as they say.

Perhaps it’s the fact that it’s almost shot like a silent film in places that turned you off.

One would think after the death of Henry Mancini that his family or estate would release all of his music! but alas that is not to be (at lest not yet anyway) which sucks!! and our luck all the recording tapes for Shot In The Dark have been reused or re-recorded over… 🙁 Good luck trying to find it.

I know this is more related to the movies, but I’ve been always curious about who performed this intro and if there’s any recording. Also, the version used for the Inspector Closeau cartoons, "A Shot in the Dark" but more rhytmic.

Has anyone been able to locate a dvd-rip of Mancini’s original score to The Pink Panther (1963), since the official soundtrack album only contains re-recorded tracks not in the film? Thanks in advance 🙂

I too am an avid fan of the Panther films. I see you are as well and are quite knowledgeable regarding the history of the films. I was wondering if you have ever come across information as to why THE PINK PANTHER was screened in those countries in ’63 before the official premiers in the U.S. and U.K. I have always pondered this but never found any information anywhere. It looks like, according to IMDB, that it was also released in Greece that year.

I know this thread is a couple of years old, but tonight would mark the actual 50th Anniversary of the release in West Germany and I stumbled across this.

Why !!??

Anyone tried to rip ‘A Shot In The Dark’ without fx? If that’s even possible? Strange it never got a proper release since it’s easily the most dramatic and interesting of all Clouseau related scores with the intense ‘Shadow of Paris’ imho.
Maybe considered too serious and dark for the record companies execs. Who knows?
