Anyone have a rip of the soundtrack to "Sim Ant" on Super Nintendo? I’ve searched for any mp3s or spc files to no avail. The SNES version is the one I’m looking for since I’m pretty sure the PC game had different music (but hey the PC soundtrack would be a bonus). Hope someone remembers this game!

Any new possibilities on this one? I really really want to have this soundtrack since Sim Ant was actually one of my favorite games as a kid 🙂

If SNESmusic.org rips this whole soundtrack I can post it for you, but until then I just downloaded the game and ripped all the music I could find at the start. This gave me 11 tracks, almost 25 minutes, which I’ve uploaded for you here (http://www.multiupload.com/4WUV8PN7U9). I figured something was better than nothing, right?

If you want to play the game and extract the rest yourself, use the zsnes emulator and whenever a new piece of music comes up, press S at the beginning of it. It can be pretty tricky to catch the very start of it though, and this process is a pain in the ass in general, but it’ll save an SPC file. If you go to SNESmusic.org you can download a Winamp plugin that’s very easy to install and use that will let you play it back. You’ll have to tag it and set how long it should play for yourself though. That’s what I’ve done here and converted to MP3 for you.

SPC files are very very small, but are lossless, and there are thousands of games ripped (and timed and tagged) in that format, so it opens up quite a world of music to you by just getting that Winamp plugin. There’s also one for foobar2000.

Wow! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this! I really appreciate it! Just out of curiosity, if record an SPC file from an SNES rom using zsnes, does it record sound effects as well, or is it able to isolate whatever the code is that plays music? I’ve collected spc files for years now, but I’ve never actually known how to rip them. If the sound effects are recorded, it sounds like you did an excellent job workingaround them. I doubt I’ll make an attempt since your rip doesn’t seem to be missing too much, but it’s good to have the info for future reference. Thanks again!

It doesn’t record in real time. What happens is you press the button and it searches for where to start the file at, which will be, like, the next beat from where you pressed it. That’s why it’s hard to catch the beginnings and you can hear I couldn’t get it on "Park". And that’s it. It’s generated right then, complete. You’ve just got to fill in all the other stuff yourself. No sound effects unless they’re built into the music, like the bird sounds in the park music, in which case you can then locate which voice it’s on and mute it yourself after ripping.

If I’d known you knew about SPCs, I’d have just uploaded this (http://www.multiupload.com/8WUIXGYGF0) for you. The birds are on voices 7 and 8. If you play the game again sometime in the future, if you collect the rest of the music in it SNESmusic.org would probably take it. I don’t think this is how they get their SPCs though because of how impractical this method is.

Anyway, glad I could be of service. 😀
