I’ve compiled a list of my favourite Top 50 characters in FF history. This doesn’t include the MMORPG games however, or FF13. The reason FF13 is not included is because I’m on Disc 3 but it got laser burned (gah!). So it’s just FF1 – FF10, and FF12.
I’m announcing on a day to day basis what came what, and I’ll post what character got what each day on here.
#50 is Garland from FFI. To view why, click here: Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/10/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters.html)
By all means debate on here if you agree or disagree with my choices.
I hope you enjoy the list 🙂

Sorry, can someone move this to the General FF game discussion area? I placed it here by accident. 🙁

Yeah I like Golbez, there are other main villains in the Top 50 you’ll see 🙂
I take it we shouldn’t read too much into your choice of Avatar, Johnny?
Haha I can see where you’re coming from, but I’m not going to comment 😉
I can’t post #44 yet, I’ll post it after work (it’s 8am here in the UK, I finish at 4:30pm).
Yes, Golbez certainly deserves to be mentioned from both a FF IV and Dissidia point of view. In FF IV he is so much stronger and has a more commanding presence than his brother Cecil. Beside Golbez, Cecil looks like a scrawny mouse. Golbez’s sheer size and might sets him apart from any other villian in the FF series, and in Dissidia both his voice and abilities reflect this. From a design point of view Golbez is definitely the all domeneering, hulking dark figure; visually he seems to be indeed the indimidating mountain of strength. His apearance in the opening sequence of Dissidia is awesome to behold.
I would consider him to be a very good villian as he doesn’t fall into that rut of being the ‘talk and no action baddie’ or the ‘divulges his plans of destruction in a lengthly bought of gloating…..while the protagonist is making good his escape’ type of villian. He has it together and because of this (and the reasons I mentioned before) I really like him.
#46 in my list is The Emperor from FF2.
I also agree with this choice. For reasons I can’t quite explain I particularly like the Emperor too. He does seem to be quite the opposite of Golbez but I suppose I find his schemes clever (if not a bit amusing). His prideful ways can sometimes leave you baffled but I find it very entertaining listening to his over-inflated opinions of ‘how great he is’.
In Dissidia one of my favourite defeat quotes would be The Emperors: "Only a temperary withdrawal". The first time I herad that I just had to laugh.
#50 is Garland from FFI
Now this one I don’t agree with. I hate Garland as he is such a predictably bad villian (as opposed to a good villian if you know what I mean). He’s loud and doesn’t seem to have much depth to his character. Personal opinion only of course but I wish that there was a better representation for FF I. Imo even Fighter would be better.
I wanted to include at least one character from each FF game and the best character from FF1 was Garland, so he scraped the Top 50. 🙂
I mean, he’s okay and I have no real problem with him as a character as such. But I thought the whole business with Terra and what he was actually doing, was very rushed and badly executed.
It happens quite a bit in JRPGs. Well thought out and paced first half of the game, with great characters, events and stories. Then they suddenly get tired of this and say ‘And now… Space… and Time Travel… and Alternate Dimensions… and God… and Aliens…’
Except that these wondrous new revelations invariably get wrapped up very quickly and easily, compared to the meticulous earlier work. Garland is a prime example, showing up in his aptly named ‘Invincible’, only to be swiftly knocked on the head just a few hours later (along with any real mention of him). Necron is an even more extreme example of this.
I realise he isn’t very far up your list, and like I say, I don’t mind him at all really. He just has the unfortunate effect of reminding me how unsatisfactory FF9 got after the first disc or so.
#42 in my countdown to my favourite FF characters is Kain from FF4. Agree? Disagree? Let me know, check out the list so far by clicking below.
Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Continued) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/10/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters_14.html)
Yup, Kain is indeed a great choice, maybe he should have been placed a little higher on the scale though imo. I heard that he’s going to be a playable character in the up and coming Dissidia sequel, so I’ld say he’s about to become more popular soon. 🙂
But like I said, he’s a sound enough choice. (He’s also one of the only characters I recognise thus far, as the only FF I’ve played before FF7 are FF3 and FF6).
I’ve played all of them from FF7 onwards though, so unless your list is extremely heavy on the earlier games, I should be able to keep up!
Moar post pl0x
I thought a lot of people would disagree with Kain’s position, but this is my personal list, if it were the "most memorable" or "most important" then Kain would be much higher. 🙂
It’s just that when you consider the enormity of the task Garland has been set, his story is all done and dusted in a matter of hours. He barely features at all until Terra, and that section only takes a couple of hours to do from start to finish.
But like I said, he’s a sound enough choice. (He’s also one of the only characters I recognise thus far, as the only FF I’ve played before FF7 are FF3 and FF6).

Yeah it’s pretty heavy FF6-FF10, I was not a huge FF12 fan and prior to FF6 the games weren’t boasting many memorable characters.

Sorry for not posting yesterday, my computer is bust and I don’t work on a weekend, and the public library was closed. Pretty much all my options were exhausted, but I’ll post #41 in about 5 hours 🙂

Whoever is following it, how are you finding the list? 🙂
Oh, my post wasn’t directed at you Johnny, however I hope you post as much as possible! I was just commenting on that weirdo who has nothing more than one or two words to say in any thread. But your list is quite intriguing, and I’m liking your selections! Keep it up! 🙂
I like Barret, and he’d almost certainly be in my Top 20. I honestly can’t think of 40 characters from the series who I’d consider better than him.
BTW CC, that Pyramid Head picture is awesome, I’m a huge PH fan :p
Oooooh yeah man! Classic! I just love this guy. He would also be a favourite of mine. What a lovable goon!
#39 in my list is possibly a debatable one, it’s Gilgamesh from FF9, my favourite version of him.
For what it’s worth, I completely agree with you here. I thought all former versions except for VIII paled in comparrison.
Keep it up man, I’m intrigued on how this will turn out.
#37 is probably the oddest choice in the entire list, it’s The Nero Brothers from FF9. You don’t have to understand, I just love them 😉 Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Continued) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/10/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters_20.html)

No, no, I’ld say the placing is just fine.

I do understand this one oddly enough. I wouldn’t say I love as such, but they’re non too shabby.
Impressive work JMS!
Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Continued) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/10/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters_20.html)
I’d swap Seifer around with Reno. As much as I enjoy FFVIII, Seifer just bored me… only his two flunkies, Rajin and Fujin, were any good due to the slapstick nature of their relationship.
#39 in my list is possibly a debatable one, it’s Gilgamesh from FF9, my favourite version of him. Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Continued) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/10/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters_20.html)
Gilgamesh is better, imo, in FFXI as a Pirate and leader of the pirates of Norg. However, as you stated Johnny, you’re not including FFXI characters (which is a mistake as there are some great ones in that game) due to FFXI being a MMO and that’s your choice.
For what it’s worth, I completely agree with you here. I thought all former versions except for VIII paled in comparrison.
Gilgamesh in FFVIII is the same Gilgamesh from FFV, both are pretty good. I admit though, I love the music piece for one of the fights with Gilgamesh "Clash on the Big Bridge".
Reno has an interesting look (his weapon is still fairly unique and he has a good, relaxed and confident posture), but I still prefer Elena. Reno would likely make my top 40, Elena would be somewhere in the 30s, I would imagine.
Once again apologies for no listing yesterday, I still don’t have this computer sorted out but it’s being done as we speak so fingers crossed it won’t be the same case next Sunday. I’ll post in a few hours. 🙂
Reno and Rude just treat it like a 9 to 5 job, and that makes me have much less sympathy with them. They drop the plate on Sector 7, not because they think serving Shinra is the right thing to do, but because it’s their job.
Isn’t that what the Nazis said?
But that doesn’t stop their appearances in the first half of the game being awesome. And how cool is his weapon, that sort of buzzsaw sword thing? Now that’s a proper weapon!

Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Part 5) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/10/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters_26.html)
She is one of the only characters I did like in FFX (along with Auron, who’d be in my Top 3). I think the actress voicing Rikku was so good, that she made the character much more interesting than she was intially written (she doesn’t actually get much to do in FFX and is wasted for most of the game, but she’s superb in FFX-2).
Your choice of Squall also got me thinking about just how few main heroes and heroines would make my Top 50. The only lead character I really can’t stand is Tidus, but I doubt very much that I’d include many of the others either. They often seem a bit dull, and once you strip away the main plotline, there usually isn’t very much to them.
I just loled at seeing Jenova here! It’s deliciously random!!!! 🙂
I would also like to say that Zorn and Thorn were placed well on this list. They did indeed deserve to feature in it, so good work on that.
A quick recap from #50-#26:
#50 – Garland (I)
#49 – Doctor Tot (IX)

#29 – Jenova (VII)
#28 – Rikku (X)

#25 is Bugenhagen from FF7, I love this dude. Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Part 6) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/10/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters_31.html)
This is the only one I sort of find a bit unusual. I didn’t find Kimahri to be anything other the stereotypical Native American archetype. Consider the dark skin, serious demeanor, muscular build, tribal pride, noble attitude, toplessness, clothing that goes around his waist, Gagazet music (although this applies to all Ronso), and the fact that he speaks grammatically incorrect English. He’s the complete Indian stereotype. And the whole deal with him opening up (exemplified by his speaking roles becoming longer and more prominent) is an overused cliche in my opinion. Moreover, thinking about his skills and attributes, he really has no special job/class/role in battle, simply considering his location on the sphere grid. So I didn’t find him very useful until you bring him into the area of someone else. If you like him, that’s fine, and maybe you don’t have an explanation for why you like him, but I was just wondering if you’d like to expand upon this choice.
Edit: On a more general note, I was wondering if you were considering FFX characters solely in their FFX context, or if you were also thinking of their roles in FFX-2 (if you’ve played that game, of course), because most of the characters from X appear in X-2.

It is one of those situations where I just like him for who he is. I love the story behind his character, the similar stereotypical "pride" you hear often, but with Kimahri with his broken horn. I also like how well he takes his responsibility to look after Yuna, he is the most dedicated of all the guardians. You do raise some good points, I don’t disagree, but I just think he’s very cool. It’s not easy to describe why you like certain characters, you just do. 🙂
#24 is Irvine from FF8. Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Continued) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/11/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters.html)
And I pretty much agree with Olde – Kimarhi does nothing for me. But then I didn’t like most of the characters, playable or otherwise, in FFX. Auron, Rikku and Yunalesca are the only ones I’d pick from that game. I love Yunalesca’s ‘Medusa Head’ form, its so freaky and cool – unlike the rest of the game.

Auron is dedicated to getting rid of Sin and getting the party to know the corruption behind Yevon. But in terms of Yuna and her personal pilgrimage, I’d say Kimahri is more loyal. Anyway it’s a good debate which is what I want! 🙂
I didn’t like Yunalesca much, but that was probably because her character wasn’t as explored as it should have been. But yes, her final form is freaking cool, especially the transformation.
#23 is Locke from FF6. Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Continued) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/11/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters.html)
And I’m not sure you can say that Kimarhi is the most dedicated, because I think Wakka, Lulu and Tidus are all equally as dedicated to her. They all love her in one way or another.
And your placement of Cloud doesn’t really concern me. I personally wouldn’t include him at all, but I knew he almost certainly would be in your list (because he’s in most lists).
But he’s a prime example of someone who is beholden to the main plot for his personality, IMO. They give him a very basic personality with a bit of arrogance and machoness early on, but that soon gets lost in the shuffle, until he’s just spouting exposition about the plot, with no identifiable personality traits that we don’t see all the time in a million other ‘RPG Hero with Sword’ types.
He’s got no interesting banter, no quirks of personality, he has no particularly engaging ways of relating to different characters – its all ‘Party leader talking to party members’ etc.
I don’t hate Cloud, I don’t even dislike him. But he’s too nondescript for my liking.
#20 is Baku from FF9, a character I think is actually. Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Part 7) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/11/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters.html)
#18 is Jecht, the father of Tidus, from FF10. Just so you know, Tidus isn’t in this list. Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Continued) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/11/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters_10.html)
Yeah Jecht’s cool but why isn’t Tidus on this list? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t know that much about the guy, only what I’ve seen of him on YouTube fan Vids and Dissidia. He didn’t seem all that bad. Though I have heard others complain about him too, so I’m just wondering what the problem is with him?
I can’t speak for Johnny, but my problems with Tidus are that he’s an insufferable brat who’s far too full of himself, plus he constantly swings between bouts of shouting and crying.
One of my favourite Final Fantasy moments is getting 100% completion on Final Fantasy X-2, being given the option to bring him back and saying ‘No thanks!’
I really can’t stand him. But then I also can’t stand Jecht either.
And I have to agree that Squall is definately more emo than Cloud. I like him better, and he does have some personality (even if it is a very stiff one), but he still wouldn’t make my Top 50.
Tobli for #1!

Haha the "No thanks!" thing is harsh but understandable 😀
I pretty much agree with your assessment on Tidus, I do like the story behind his character though, just not him.
As for Tobli, I completely forgot about him! But I’m not doing FFX-2, only FF1-10, and FF12. 🙂
The bit where he gives his creditors the slip by zipping off in that car is pure gold!
Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Continued) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/11/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters_10.html)
#16 is Red XIII from FF7. Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Part 7) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/11/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters.html)
#15 is Steiner from FF9. Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Part 8) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/11/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters_10.html)
#14 is Ultros from FF6. (same link as #15)
#13’s entry completes the quartet of FF8 characters in my list, my favourite from the game, Laguna. Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Continued) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/11/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters_15.html)
I’d probably have put Steiner in my Top 10. His jumping up and down with fury is priceless, and he even wins over the coolest (not to mention hardest) heroine in the game too.
But Ultros… Don’t get me wrong, he’s probably my favourite character from FF6, but I’ll never forgive him for killing me and making me do that whole play again!
Gutted about Ultros, don’t hold it against him for beating you!
But hey, I definately have much love for the many legged fiend! And if I was really excluding people because they beat me, I’d have to exclude the ‘Stock Break’ wielding menace from FF9 that we were just talking about! And that would never happen because come on, surely nobody would leave her out of a favourite characters list.
Oh, and I got a bit mixed up before. I meant to say that Laguna is my favourite *playable* character in FF8. My favourite overall is Fujin.
#12 in my list is Seymour, who I consider an underrated bad guy, from FF10. Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Continued) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/11/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters_15.html)
Many people have either a love or hate relationship with that dude. Can’t say I’ve come across much of the love though.
What’s the do with his hair, is what I want to know. The back part and the colour’s fine but as for the fringe………?
So…why Seymour?
But hey, at least he’s not in the Top 10…
#11 is Hojo from FF7, I love this fucked up bastard. Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Continued) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/11/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters_15.html)
Oh, so you love to hate him huh? Well that’s all right so, I can understand that. 🙂
For a start, there was a *lot* of pressure on this character to be impressive, at least with regard to engaging me in the game. Because one of my chief problems with FFX, is the almost complete lack (or poor quality of) of non monstrous creature villains. For the first third of the game, I was really struggling to be bothered continuing, because there were no enemies of any consequence. Sin is a big whale which I just think is ridiculous, and the only other baddies were jokey ones like the Luca Goers and that snippy summoner Dona. I was beginning to feel like the game would never give me any proper villains, and then… Seymour.
To say I was unimpressed would be the understatement of this or any century. I believe my exact words were ‘This is the guy I’ve been waiting for?! This clown?!’ On every level he disappoints. Uninispiring look, name (for a villain anyway), and completely lacking in any sort of menace or majesty. He does nothing of interest, showing up every now and again to say ‘Now I am even more powerful – bwa ha aha!’
Before getting creamed – again.
He’s the kind of villain you imagine your party saying ‘Oh man, not you again! Don’t you ever get the message?!’ He does nothing that interests me in the slightest. I didn’t like Kimarhi or the Ronso, so his antics on Mt Gagazet were an annoyance, rather than something I cared about. Bihran and Yenke were utterly B-list characters, so when they squared off against a B-list villain, I just felt like the game was wasting my time.
He has no connection with the characters. Even though he has that Walt Disney ‘I’m going to marry the heroine’ story, there are no memorable or signficant conversations between him and Yuna, Tidus etc. He’s just a joke. The icing on the cake was his final appearance, where he for some reason thought he would win, despite the titanic thrashings I’d given him throughout the game.
Auron killed him in 2 chops. That says it all.
#9 in my list brings closure to the females in the list, ending with Beatrix from FF9. Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters (Continued) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/11/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters_20.html)
Auron’s only at number 8?! He’s like the only reason I’d ever play FFX again…
And I see Beatrix made the list – good stuff. If she’d been a permanent playable character, there might have been hope for FF9.
What’s up, Top?
As I mentioned to you a while back, I didn’t play FF6 until years and years after it came out. By the time I played it, I’d already played FF7, 8, 9, 10, and all sorts of other RPGs. So for better or worse, I don’t have any ‘ah, those were the days’ memories of it.
Like with most of the FF6 characters, I have no real opinion of Kefka at all. For me, the characters in that game rarely grabbed me beyond a simple ‘Who do I think will make the strongest team, so I can proceed?’
I didn’t engage with the actual story or the stories (such as they were) of the characters at all really. So as I say, I don’t have any opinion of him one way or the other. I can’t remember very much about him (or most of the game really).
Anyway, looking forward to the rest of the list. If Sir Fratley doesn’t feature, I’ll be most put out – another character you should have been able to play as.
#5 is Balthier from FF12, by far the best character from the game, in my opinion.
Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters: In 5th Place… (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/11/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters_20.html)
Seriously though, I’m not a big fan of Balthier. Gideon Emery is a fine voice actor, but a lot of Bathier’s lines sound like something Ace Rimmer would say. Not that it wouldn’t have been amusing if Balthier had told Vayne to smoke him a kipper…
I’d probably put Balthier in a Top 50 somewhere, but Basch, Ashe, Gabranth and Dr Cid are all much better characters IMO.
#4 is Zidane from FF9, so those who predicted #1 had good reason to, but no he’s not. 🙂 Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters: In 4th Place… (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/11/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters_20.html)

Him?!?! That white haired girly boy with a phallic obsession with that sword of his?!?
Meh… could be worse I guess… could’ve been that twit Vaan from FFXII >.<
And keep it up Johnny! It’s gonna be too bad when you finish this list, because I look forward to reading each new entry!
Sephiroth may be a boringly predictable choice, but I have to agree with it all the same. His look will obviously get on some people’s nerves (not as bad as Kuja though), but he’s still an iconic character. He’s also used quite well and quite economically, (practically a ‘Less is More’ kind of way by today’s standards, because he really doesn’t have all that many lines when you get down to it).
I object to your #2 however and I strongly object to your #1 (as it’s fairly obvious who it is)!
But yeah, nice work man – it’s been great.
I’ve really enjoyed doing this and I’m glad some of you have too! Thanks everyone 🙂
Johnny Mercyside: My Top 50 Final Fantasy Characters: The Winner (+ more) (http://johnnymercyside.blogspot.com/2010/11/my-top-50-final-fantasy-characters_28.html)
I deeply whole-heartedly disagree with the 1st place to a facepalm worthy, but I won’t troll the thread by posting my reasons of why.
Good Job anyway.
:billymays:
You know, I really enjoyed this listing of yours. Is there any chance you might consider doing a Top 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 list of anything else from the series? Such as . . . airships? Or . . . anything else? I think you’ve got a lot of talent in writing on such things.
Thanks CC, I have thought about it, but I want to explore other medias for a bit, I’m a wrestling fan and I’m going to do a wrestling catchphrases one soon.
But yeah I have thought about doing a "moments" one or a "locations" one. I also want to attempt a "most important" characters one, an unbiased list if you will. There are many opportunities but I doubt I’ll do it for a while. 🙂
I’m a stubborn guy, I don’t want to go professional unless someone actually gives me a job where I have the freedom to write what I want, it’s hard to get that in journalism nowadays. Shucks.
