I’m not sure how you can have an Ultimate Conan thread and avoid anything from the Varese release. But good luck anyway!

In fact i have all Official Conan The Barbarian Soundtracks and only one Varese Sarabande release (the one with 16 tracks)…But of course i want admins to check if bootlegs and the MILAN release is authorized to be posted here…Now if not, this not a big problem as this thread is also to give infos about all known Conan The Barbarian OST…(as far as i know)

Does anyone know of a complete/exapnded version of ‘Conan the Barbarian’ that does not have F/X?
(Just looking for information, I don’t want anyone to get into trouble posting it.)

No. There is a dvd rip that has VERY minimal fx, but that is it. There is an expanded Conan the Destroyer with no fx, it seems to be a recording session

Effectively, like babydoll said, there is no Conan The Barbarian OST with no FX…But it exists a 2CD Bootleg with minimal FX known as 1982 Extended Version and/or 1982 Expanded Score (take a look at my first post) which contains a lot of new tracks (directly ripped from the DVD) which are not on original Varese Sarabande Release. For me this bootleg is the best soundtrack a Conan The Barbarian music fan should have in his collection (of course with the two originals and officials Motion Picture Soundtracks)…But sadly this is a bootleg very expensive and not so easy to find…

The complete bootleg only has min fx, mostly in the track "resourceful warriors", and it is very minimal. I despise fx of any kind, and I still burned it to cd. 😀 No, some versions do have fx also in the witch scene, and some do not. Also, many posted versions have snipets of dialog included as seperate tracks, these can be kept or discarded as wished. Sound quality does vary some. Not sure if Destroyer is Varese, but if anyone wants the expanded score for that PM me. File says 320, but I think the source is pooer than that. Still, an interesting listen…

I wish that the recording tapes could be found and restored for a new edition. Basil had a copy but is now damaged, and there is no word of what was survived from the recording sessions.
Maybe in the future will get a new recording like Lawrence or El Cid had. That would be a blast.

I’ve always been confused by anything other than the retail CD’s for these.
I’m so skeptical about anything expanded for these ones.
I should check the request forums at LaLaLand or Silvascreen and see if there’s a petition going for these yet.

Conan is good, but would have been EPIC with a couple more complex characters. As it is, only James Earl Jones actually stands out.

The score, however, is orgasm-worthy. I swear Basil would have taken one look at The Legend of Zelda (what this score makes me think of most often) and understood.

The quality of the cimmerian records is – unfotunately- partly crap.
Better don�t spend your money for it.
But if you want the best recording, buy the Tadlow release from the City of Prague Symphony.

The cimmerian release is the most extended version of the Poledouris recording. Sure, of the alternate and unreleased cues, there are 2 or 3 with less quality. But overall is the best release out there for the Poledouris recordings.

The Tadlow release was a gimmick, its not the original orchestration, and it was recorded in 2 day (rehearsal included). Several people (me included) agree the recording lacks of strength and dynamics.

But its up to each one’s taste :

If you want 5.1 sound of a different recording, get the Tadlow.

If you want the original Poledouris version available, get the Cimmerian.

No way ! Even on the "flac" version the OST tracks are corrupted on the Cimmerian "Conan The Barbarian", like an upsampled MP3, very badly done. Sounds like shit. Get the Originals, The expanded Varese Club, or even the short Milan (wich may sound better to some for a few track). Avoid the very first CD edition though.

First, learn to read, I never said the sound was superb, I said its good. The only arrogant here its you, who CANNOT use your own ears, and have to run the music through computer software to know whats the sound quality, because its obvious you and your "mom" cant tell the difference.

Second, that one is the best source available for Poledouris full original recordings. You want to compare sound to previous official releases who had access to the analog tapes? (Btw the link is not working, so at least try to upload something as evidence, when you want to show us how clean your lens is and how good you remix).

Don’t know what are you trying to prove by saying "Its horrible quality". Something like "Yes, I’m a genius and can tell about sample rate because I know how to use a computer software! Worship my intelligence!!"?

Well, is this versdion of yours sans aby fx? Cause any version I have had that is of the original have been dvd sourced for at least a few tracks.
But, either way, this should all be rendered moot with the upcoming release of the complete original scores.

The only track with SFX is the witch, which has her yellings. And of course Mako’s monologue (still, you have that same track without it also)

That track, and Battle of the Mounds part II. I have had every version of the score mentioned, and not one has the original fx free. Saying elsewise is just wrong. Additionally, the "Gladiator" track sounds like it was recorded onn an old tape recorder from under water. There are a few others. ALL non-official albums are sourcing dvd / blue=ray for the music. THAT is the fact.

There has been an official announcement. Both Conan scores will be released in full this year. I did NOT say the set was full of fx, I merely daid SOME tracks are dvd sourced, and that ONE track was poor quality. Don’t mix my statements with other’s.

They’ve made a few comments. They are releasing both scores, in complete form. The first one will be in stereo (unlike the old Varese editions), and will contain many alternates. The gave no time table, just that it should be out sometime this year.

They were there…24-track and 4-track units in pristine condition and complete, sitting right where we expected them to be at Universal. We transferred everything…the sound is stunning. Simply stunning. Going back to the 24-track is going to reveal a detail and ferocity on both scores you just haven’t heard before. Basil often went for a muscular, powerhouse over the top performance to match unrivaled visuals and got it in a way no big orchestral score had quite achieved up to that point. Remember the feeling when you heard these scores for the first time? You’ll feel it again! Fans of these scores should be ready to have their socks knocked off.

BARBARIAN will probably be an MAF release. The verdict is still out on DESTROYER. I wish I could give you a date but the UMG machine is wildly unpredictable.

I recall talking at length to Basil about the first score while we were mastering our very first release, which was RED DAWN. One of the things he stated was how disappointed he was that the film ended up being mixed just for mono presentations. He said one reel had been mixed in Dolby surround for testing and the producers decided not to incur the extra costs. Basil was really frustrated because he said he’d managed to capture such ferocious "over the top" performances on the multi-channel session masters and couldn’t understand why the film makers would reduce it all down into a mono film soundtrack.

The two-track mixes were used for the record versions (and the later Varese CDs) and everyone, including Basil, pointed out those actual original 24-track session masters were lost for ever. So it was a goosebump moment to find virtually everything alive and well in those Universal vaults.

Since these are the unedited masters being heard for the first time, we’re having a blast finding out all sorts of cool stuff: Basil’s very first take of the famous CONAN THE BARBARIAN main title ("Anvil Of Crom") has those familiar French horns starting out not low as they always have done BUT way up an octave, screaming in the upper register! He obviously didn’t like the high melody line and asked them to drop it an octave. And there’s a complete bridge section recorded for the sequence after the "Funeral Pyre" scenes that has never been heard before, not even in the re-recording.

Some of the neatest things are finding out how much power Basil got out of his percussion by frequently having the tympani and bass drums try several different strokes and volume levels, making adjustments right there on the podium to get just the sound he wanted. Much of the energy comes from working right there and literally ad-libbing specific passages, then adding other percussion sounds and getting that unique Conan sound.

I honestly can’t think of many film scores where the raw power and intensity comes from players who just "go for it". THE WIND AND THE LION, recorded in Germany, comes to mind. Anyway, as Roger pointed out, when we were doing JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS, Bruce Broughton and engineer Mike Ross pointed out just how raw energy and vitality would trump clinically accurate playing on epic scores like this. I know in my heart that’s what Basil was looking for during his Conan sessions. Captured on 24-tracks spread out over two inch wide tape, I can hear those players giving Basil just what he wanted. And we’re really excited about bringing it all to you.

It’s probably one of the best scores ever and it coming out in a complete form from these sources… If you haven’t bought one single CD with film music before, this is the one to buy. And then you could almost stop buying because there are just a handful of scores that can beat this.

The Cimmerian version is a boot. As a matter of fact there aren’t any licensed editions of the original recording that covers 2 CD’s. Unless you are thinking about the re-recording, but obviously that isn’t the original recording.
The only legally licensed edition of Conan the Barbarian that will be a 2CD set of the original music recorded (assuming that it is the complete score and not just expanded), will be the upcoming Intrada edition, which is legitimate music label.

For Conan The Barbarian, the master is done. It’s three CDs and it’s truly complete: it contains everything, including alternates and the original album program. It’s assembled from the 24-track masters, which have never been heard before. All previous album releases came from �” masters, and the movie is in mono. So there are details in the music that have never been heard before. At least not unless you were there live for the recording.

If it’s three discs with the original program included, then the complete score must be all of CD 1 with the rest on CD 2, and with the other half of the second CD completed with the alternates. The third CD could be the original album and maybe with more bonus tracks.

Intrada finally admits that the only thing us fans have never heard is a remaster of the 24 tracks , because some rare pieces were already present on some bootlegs (clearly not upgraded from either vhs, dvd or bluray) like for example the unused very short themes for Destroyer and some pieces which were not listenable in whole in the movie but are present on some bootlegs. Seems like the Destroyer bootlegs contained true unheard short themes while the Barbarian bootlegs contained mainly dvd/bluray cleaned up tracks presented as "score".
What source the bootleg people used, we’ll never know but this time I belive Intrada when they say that it’s NOT the 24 track .
That will be heard for the first time in the new remastered originals CDs .
I’m asking myself also how many new unused themes will be offered, and how many alternates too and also if they will be drastically different compared to the movie versions. The only unheard bits I’ve heard were on one of the Destroyer bootlegs and they were bloody short.
