I’m not sure if Demon’s Souls is exactly what you’re after (it’s not really typically western or eastern), but it seems like the best RPG on the console to me. I haven’t had the chance to play it yet because it only just released in Australia and it’s still really expensive. Give it a look.
There’s really not many other western RPGs on the console. You’ve got games like Fallout 3, Oblivion and Borderlands (I don’t really like that game at all, but you might), I suppose.
If you’re okay with Japanese RPGs, I’d go with either Disgaea 3 (whimsical story, extremely fast paced SRPG gameplay) or Valkyria Chronicles (awful story, kind of slow but tactical SRPG gameplay). You’ve got all the traditional type of jRPGs as well, but none of them really stand out to me, including FF13.

I like Japenese RPG’s, preferably strategy style like Final Fantasy Tactics, or turn based style.
You could check out Resonance of Fate, too. I hear it’s pretty flawed but passable if you’re into the genre. I’m mostly interested in it because of this funny scene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVibNKrp8sQ
I hear the battle system is pretty unique as well.
The game itself played fairly well, but it was very easy indeed. There are tons of options and extra bits and bobs to do, which presumably power your characters up to ungodly levels, but I didn’t find I needed any of that.
Demon’s Souls however is a vastly different prospect. That is one tough game right there. Hardest game I’ve played, since Ninja Gaiden Black.
He’s played Enchanted Arms and said it was alright but nothing great; same for FFXIII although better. Finally, he also dislikes SRPGs after I gave him an explanation of how Disgaea and Valkyria Chronicles play.
Someone help me shut him up with a good game
and wait for tales of… whatever, which is also gonna be superior with all the extras.
having said that, the other games people before mentioned are quite cool and are rpgs in the truest sense of the word (except, a little, ff13)
I’ve just bought a series of tactical JRPG’s on ebay within the last two days, none of the PS3, but I heard good things about:
-Front Mission 3 (PS1)
-Valkyrie Profile (PS1)
-Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (PS2)
Also purchased RPG’s:
-Star Ocean (PS1)
On a separate note, has anybody seen the new Vandal Hearts game released on the PSN or Xbox Live Arcade? It is a newly released tactical RPG, is that game any good? Looks pretty fun.
Can’t play games on the PSP; and I have Star Ocean: Second Story, I mentioned it already…
Thumbs up for Disgaea as well MastaM. I only got ~15 hours in before I had to stop playing and focus on uni, but it’s second in line for when I get back into serious gaming; and it’s not first only because of the length of it.
Did you? Where?
Your mate is the newest addition to the ‘PS3 owners in search of decent RPGs’ club. As was stated, there really isn’t a hell of a lot out there.
Given that he already has Final Fantasy 13, I’d recommend Eternal Sonata, Dragon Age: Origins and Star Ocean: The Last Hope.
If he doesn’t like Strategy RPGs, then that pretty much nukes the rest of the field.
I absolutely never had a problem with that. Demon’s Souls is a terrific game.
Storyline based RPGs and action RPGs are sometimes two very different things. It’s not like Mass Effect, KOTOR etc for example where there is a mix of story and action. DS is about 99% action.
My brother rented it for a week and let me play it. I found it to be quite challenging.
Rune Factory Tides of Destiny. I never played any of the other Rune Factory games (or Harvest Moon games) but from what I hear it is more action oriented than the other games.
3D Dot Game Heroes- if you consider Zelda games action RPG games, then this game is the closest you will get to play Zelda on PS3
Dark Souls- is not as good as Demon’s Souls IMO. But nonetheless, it is still a good game.
Tales of Graces f- I have not finished it, but so far the game is very fun. I like the Tales battle system.
Star Ocean The Last Hope International- a lot of people overlook this game, I think it was fun to play and I also love the battle system of the Star Ocean series. The story is a little lacking but the game makes up for it.
I have played and beat Eternal Sonata on PS3, and yes it is better than the 360 version, they expand on the story and include Crescendo and Serenade as playable characters.
And then you have FFXIII and FFXIII-2.
Level 5 + Studio Ghibli = Great game play with fanatic graphics and good characters.
Though I’m not sure if the overall story is going to be anything noteworthy.
Sorry for this bump.
