Can’t wait to be ripping PS3 games. :D:D:D:D:D:D

The rips are still pretty large right now. They need to find a way to scrub all the duplicate/junk files in the image before compressing it to get it down to a decent size.

Apart from warez, jail breaking can also be used to positive effects. I hope that someone works out how to kill the region locking and introduce Other OS and PS2 Software BC to consoles who don’t have them.

Bump!

Sony Oz mod chip dongle ban hearing delayed ? reghardware (http://www.reghardware.com/2010/08/31/sony_modchip_ban/)

Wait, I thought modchips are legal in Australia.

Well the wait is finally over… Jailbreak creators also claim that the dongle doesn’t contain ANY of Sony’s software, so it could be very well legal even after the hearing.

Software is on the internets now anyway – all you need is a micro USB controller.

Very tempted to do this, but i also don’t want to get my PS3 banned on PSN. If they DO manage PS2 backwards compatibility (which would have to be emulated, so it probably wouldn’t be that much better than running PCSX2 anyway) I might change my mind. Either way, i’d wait until another PS3 price drop – I just bought a PS3 this year, I don’t want to buy another one just yet.

Copies can now be played on PS3? Great news. The games round here are expensive. 1 game is like a 1/6 of my mom’s salary.

The latest patch stops all this from working.

Great. Another huge-ass download to add to my list of things to download once I get back my room.

Because I totally wanna crash my PS3 and lose my warranty.

It doesn’t actually write anything to flash – it’s like the early PSP exploits, where you could just run ISOs (without using custom firmware).

Definitely going to give this a try once I get a hold of a microcontroller, or they finish the PSP port.

Make sure you don’t update your PS3 before then. Hopefully there’s a way to bypass updates.

Yeah, the last few years of PSP homebrew have taught me never to update.

As far as I know, all models of the PS3 have PS2 emulators (by Sony) built in. Sony just doesn’t give access. All they’d need to do is release an update to allow access, so I think hackers could do that as well.

That’s not true. The first batch of consoles for Japan and US had built-in PS1’s chip and PS2’s Emotion Engine so there was hardware enabled backward compatibility. The consoles that were made for Europe dropped the hardware backward compatibility and relied only on software one (hence the problems with some games because unlike with hardware version, they ran in an emulated environment). Later consoles dropped the backward compatibility completely. There’s not a way to add a backwards compatibility option later on, hack or no hack.

The emulator was software, so I’d guess Sony could easily add it to the store as a D/L if they wanted to. They just don’t.

I have the early model and luckily have only found one of my games that wouldn’t run properly, the Ghost in the Shell: SAC game.
