What do you guys think are the best video game cities?

My friend and I trying to compile a list of the top 10 best video game cities for a blog post he wants to do. Here’s the best of what we have so far:

Vice City – GTA: VC
Liberty City – GTA 4
Venice – Assassin’s Creed 2
Rapture – Bioshock 1-2
San Vanelona – Skate 1-2
Esthar – FF8
Anvil – Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion

Note we both mainly play PS3 games, so we’re trying to broaden our horizons and get some places on the list…and get some ideas for games that slipped our minds.

So I ask you…what are your favorite game cities? And why?

Haven City in Jak 2 was really good. As was the wasteland city in Jak 3. The Citadel in Mass Effect. Silent Hill, Rapture from Bioshock, Jerusalem from Assassin’s Creed, Florence from Assassin’s Creed II, Metropolis from Ratchet and Clank. Can’t think of any more right now, tbh.

Sim City.

For me, it’s Gotta be a tie between Lindblum, Alexandria, Treno…and the City from Mirrors Edge! 😀

A lot of stuff in Mirror’s Edge looked kinda the same to me to be honest, but it was a pretty cool city…at least for the gameplay. Course, its been quite a while since I’ve played it. And I forgot all about Treno. I need to get FF9 on the PS store.

What sort of qualifications are you looking for in your ‘Top 10’ list? Because your current list runs from the amazing (Rapture) to the beautiful (Venice – although Florence would have been my personal choice) to the grungy realism (Liberty City).

My personal vote – Rivet City from Fallout 3. The cramped spaces and wide-open areas of an aircraft carrier make for a lively bazaar-like feel, and the sun setting over the Potomac with Rivet City in the background – beautiful.

Also, although it’s not an individual city perse, the towns in Red Dead Redemption are wonderful – from the pioneer towns to the mexican villas to the ‘modern’ coastal town – they perfectly capture the late 19th century.

Rabinestre is a beautiful city although the game (FFXII) lacked something.

Actually, we debated about Rivet City. Basically, our criteria included overall fun-factor, story involvement, overall design and asthetics. But the toughest to decide are the FF cities. I was leaning Treno and Esthar…but since I like to pretend FF12 didn’t happen (lol) I’m not too sure about that game’s places since I only played it and beat it once.

But so far, the only stone cold locks are Liberty City, Rapture, Vice City, and San Vanelona.

Final Fantasy VII may be overrated.

But Midgar has a really impressive design.

I know of one, but I can’t remember the name or the game it’s from… (give me a sec on this).

My friend cries out ‘Tokyo’ from Jet Set Radio since he ‘loves’ graffiti.

The Jetset Radio Future cities are kind of cool.
