Well now…….

I’ve deciced to shoulder my hate for the game and actually play it again, ignoring any cheats and glitches (bar item manipulation(WItem Materia)) to see why so many people like it. So far its ok but its lacking the ZOMGITZTEHBEZTTHINGEVAR!!!!!! factor its supposed to. Where abouts does the story pick up because the only thing keeping me playing is of Barret’s Ungermax limit?

XII doesn’t really do well in the story department. It had some good ideas but even the developers admit it sucked. One guy was writing it initially. But then he got sick half-way through and someone else picked up where he left off. Draw your own conclusions as to what that means :p

But seriously the story had some potential. Its biggest problem is how unfocused it is. There is virtually nothing stopping from just going wherever you feel like going instead of continuing with the storyline (with a few exceptions). And given the style of the gameplay it’s virtually impossible not to get distracted. There is just so much to do, and since we’ve already established the story sucked there is really no reason to focus too much on the storyline. If you’re willing to forgive that, then underneath it is a very solid game.

The gameplay is nicely varied, there are many different locations to explore and even though there isn’t a world map the areas are enormous and you’ll probably spend some hours just to get around. This became crystal clear to me when I first traversed the Sandseas. The enviroments are all beautiful and you could just spend some time admiring the scenery if you like because it’s also nicely varied. There are forests, snowy mountains, ancient temples, spaceships, deserts, caves you name it. The soundtrack is great and very fitting.

So that’s basically it. If you’re willing to dismiss the mediocre storyline and the even more lacklustre way it’s presented, you’ll enjoy a fully-featured gameplay experience which I see no reason to detest.

I love the irony that is his username. xD

But for me and I’d say a lot of the gamers out there that have played VII it’s the childhood memories that make it the best game ever. If you played this game when you were 11 and went batshit crazy when you beat Emerald Weapon, it’s obvious that the game will engrave itself in your mind, happened to me.

Try the modded versions, for example better graphics, retranslations etc. The game seems a lot more polished then. Unless you want a retro experience. 😉
