Having had a chance to listen away from the show, somehow this isn’t grabbing me as tightly as Hirano’s other work. What a strange shaped orchestra, too! For budgetary reasons, or was it a conscious choice?
We have strings, one recorder, one saxophone, one trombone, piano, and percussion… Where the hell is the rest of the woodwind? Brass?
I think they spent all the money having the choir in pretty much *every* cue, and then could only afford half an orchestra! Often, the Japanese understand the power of the choir when it is used sparingly… but there is such a thing as overkill. Ladies and gentlemen – here it is.
Hirano’s style is of course very present… but somehow here it’s not particularly cohesive in my mind. A succession of fairly predictable classical/baroque/modernist fusion choral pieces which really miss the contributions of the absent members of the orchestra…
If money was tight, I believe it was a tactical error to use the choir so liberally. I’d have spent the money on a full orchestra and used the choir *very* sparingly in just three of four climactic cues. But then that’s me.
So, out of necessity, we have a very string oriented score – which is nice – but compared to Hirano’s previous efforts, this leaves me stone cold. Death Note still stands as Hirano’s greatest work in this style. There’s nothing wrong with Bantorra necessarily; here Hirano is a victim of his own ridiculously high standards. I find this to be Hirano’s Crystal Skull; ten thousand times better than anything else by anybody else… but it doesn’t stand comparison against the rest of his portfolio.
Oh, well… I have no doubt this is a one off and Hirano will be back to his usual tricks next time… 🙂
Thanks for share though.
Thx for sharing!
Come to think of it, it *does* sound badly mastered as well… Also, I suspect, a symptom of cheapness; Hirano’s scores are usually particularly well recorded and this just doesn’t reach those standards.
I don’t *try* to compare it either… But it’s an inescapable comparison that most people will make subconciously; Yoshihisa Hirano is my God, so I find myself reacting disproportionatly when he does something that doesn’t reach me as he usually does. There’s something about his music that excites me, terrifies me, and provokes a very particular emotional reaction, all at the same time. Those facets are mostly missing here, and to say this pains me… nobody wants to admit when those they worship only perform at 99%.
Bantorra feels almost conventional, I suppose. One thing that really attracts me to Hirano’s style is the insane mixture of styles. In comparison, a lot of this is straight classical, or straight baroque. The Victors wouldn’t upset Haydn. For God’s sake – Chu Bra is more harmonically adventurous and it’s a show about teenage girls discussing underwear.
Bantorra is very moody and brooding… but in the end it sounds to me like Hirano wasn’t entirely on the ball. There’s only so much one man can give; perhaps he was overworked. Perhaps he just wasn’t inspired. Perhaps his hand was forced by producers, or by budget. Who knows? Either way, for me, this will not receive nearly as many spins as Chubra, or Death Note, or Kotetsushin Jeeg, or Meine Leibe, or Ouran High School Host’s Club, or Super Robot Wars, or Real Drive, or Ippo, or Top Secret will…
…Though it will still receive a hundred times more spins than Iron Man 2. 😉
Finally, its not that the entire album is poorly mastered, just they decided to clip the tracks with the most epic choir. Many of the other tracks have normal waveform and sound fine.
EDIT: also i never really listened to Death Note. How many tracks on each soundtrack did Hirano compose anyway?
Oh, believe me, I was going to. 😉
I’m not going to waste time on that Taniuchi crap…
Rather than the special Hirano alchemy we’ve heard before, it feels flat and pastichey. It’s certainly entertaining though, and I don’t mind the lack of brass and woodwind so much. You could play me bloody Oasis on harpsichord and I’d be grinning ear to ear with delight! The piano tracks are nice too, even if they come off a bit like mutton dressed as lamb (ornaments can only do so much). We shouldn’t take for granted that Hirano can do all this so tastefully (choral aberrations notwithstanding). It’ll take a while for me to make sense of it.
Thank you for the post! 🙂
Edit: A good example of subtle Hirano magic, "In the Realm of the Illusion" enshrouds a classical piano accompaniment figure (like in a Moxart piano sonata) in thick string dissonances, creating a familiar suspense motif with a twist! Brilliant, but tantalisingly brief.
The flac links are dead. Could you reupload it?
And anyway, thank you for sharing this.
Hirano has not been particularly busy this year; I imagine this has something to do with the sudden lack of music budgets in the field of anime. It’s made me notice Bantorra just a little more.
In a year where there has been, to my knowledge, no orchestral score at all for a television anime, with the exception of Star Driver (and about five minutes of music in Digimon Xros Wars by Kousuke Yamashita)… I find my attention is perhaps marginally easier to capture.
I entered password (smile) correctly. Yet i keep getting this error.
Been waiting for your reply :D.
Lossless version is what i have downloaded. I have downloaded two times. Same error.
