Gotta be honest I’m not very far into the game but I have listened to my selection CD that came with and I was not very impressed . . . come back Nobuo 🙁

I’ve only listened through it twice, but it really puzzles me that anyone could dislike it. I’m not one of those Hamauzu fanboys by any means, but clearly it is more than merely competent music. I can’t really pick out favorites but, to me, it is effortlessly listenable and pretty satisfying. The only reason I haven’t heard it more is that I’ve had bunches of other things on my list to listen to and there’s only so many hours in a day.

I like Will to fight as well, but my favorite is March of the Dreadnoughts

Prelude to FFXIII (the theme for the opening credits), Eidolons (self explainatory) and The Warpath Home (the later stages of Chapter 1) are some of my favourite FFXIII tracks.

Eidolons especially really suits the high-pressure tempo of the Eidolon fights, and even in non-Eidolon battles (such as against the Hover Tank in Palampolom) it fits right at home. Definitely one of my favourite FF battle themes now. 😀

However, Cocoon de Chocobo ~ Chasing Dreams, that undeniably cheesy pop rendition of a seminal Uematsu track (which plays in the ‘Chocobo Petting Arena’ at Nautilus) is such a horrible earworm, I can’t help but like it, even despite Leona Lewis’s terrible lyrics ("let’s go find, gil and fame!"). :p

Overall, Masashi Hamazu is not a bad composer, and on the whole he did a pretty good job with FFXIII’s OST, he still seems to me to be a pale shadow of Uematsu – most of his pieces still seem to be nothing more than military-style marches with percussion and little else (compare The Warpath Home with WRO March from FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus or Time of Judgement from FFX). Even his attempt at rousing orchestral pieces, such as Fighting Fate (the Barthandelus battle theme), despite an awesome start, just ended up as a cacophony of noise.

Still, I mostly enjoyed FFXIII’s OST, and felt it did fit in with the rather jaundiced storyline and mechanical pacing of the game. It’s just I find Hamazu as a composer to be inferior to Uematsu, and that attitude has remained unchanged after the FFXIII OST.

Uematsu most likely won’t be coming back to the series, but you know what composer I would really like to see compose the score for the next final fantasy? Kenji Ito. I think he’d fantastic for the job.

As for the FFXIII OST… meh. I’ve heard better from Hamauzu.

Ah, you do know that Uematsu is confirmed as composer for FFXIV right Smarty?

As for beyond FFXIV, it’s anyone’s guess whether he will continue to compose for the series. Given the fact that Uematsu is now ‘freelance’, he can pick and choose who he works for, it’s possible he could return for future titles in the series as composer.

But I digress.

Square has only a few composers now, and I’m not sure if any of them are going to get to do a whole main Final Fantasy on their own. I wonder if they’ll put together a team of composers for the next game in the series.

Born anew, will to fight, Sarah’s theme, Sabres edge, test of the L’cie, start your engines, blinded by light, Lightning’s theme, …well, all of them are my favorite.

I know, but I’m not excited the slightest bit. It’s going to be as if he never returned to begin with. The series doesn’t need another MMO game. If he did the music for FFXV or even any kind of spin-off now that would be some news.

Hmm so based off your quotes Nobuo is the only composer "worthy" of Final Fantasy music composition?

That’s not what I said. But seeing as how he nailed every single one he did and the others weren’t as good, I’d say that he is the best for the job. But like I said I would like to see Kenji Ito make an FF soundtrack seeing as how Nobuo probably isn’t returning.

I enjoyed them, too! The only thing I have to complain is that the team use the same melody too often (The Promise, Serah’s Theme, etc.). Although there are plenty great ones.

Lightning Theme and Blinded by Light are my favorites so far.
